ATARAXIA/ALLERSEELEN- ULTIMA THULE (ALPHA) -Label: ECLIPSIS Tracks: ATARAXIA - Lunar Oceans, inspired by "The Silmarillion" of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, ALLERSEELEN - Der König in Thule, based on "Faust" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The concept of this release is based on the journey the Greek Pytheas made to Ultima Thule, the outermost limit of the ancient world. "On that day in 335 B.C. the city of Massilia was buzzing with excitement as news of the event spread amongst the traders, both great and small, in Massilia Street, the main shopping thoroughfare that ran along the entire length of the seafront next to the sea. Pytheas was preparing for a very important mission: to set sail for the North, in search of the sources of tin and amber..." Exclusive text by Historian Mr. Christos D. Lazos. LUV MACHINE - WITCHES WAND/DON'T LET THE BLUES (70’s psych )- Label:RISE ABOVE Originally released in 1970, Witches Wand is as classic as it gets from this magical era in underground music. To this day it remains a firm favourite at 60's mod, psych and 70's rock clubs up and down the country. Formed in the tropical climates of Barbados 1967, The Luv Machine relocated to the UK in late 1968 to seek fame and fortune in those swinging times. The band started out playing the underground black soul clubs of the Midlands area. Their sound was a lot harder than the initial club circuit in which they were being booked. Influenced by Hendrix, Cream, Credence Clearwater Revival and other more obscure hard rock bands of the time, Luv Machine managed to combine elements of both rock & soulful psych with a funky progressive groove. Added to this was a Caribbean vibe, which made them completely unique amongst rivals of the day. The bands self titled debut album that was released for Polydor in 1971, has become a much revered and collectable item amongst collectors and fans of the era. Unfortunately the band split before the album was actually released, which meant it was never actually given the publicity it surely deserved. Who knows what may of happened if the situation would have been different for them. * Feature previously unreleased B-Side; 'Don't Let The Blues Take Over Pt.3'. (Note, this version of the song will not appear on the album, 'Turns You On'). 45 RPM $14 SKU:8510

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC IN - ANTHEM OF THE SPACE (modern psych )- Label:EKTRO Acid Mothers Temple of course need no further introduction, being one of the leading names in contemporary spacerock. Musicians participating in this latest AMT project are a.o. Tabata Mitsuru (Zeni Geva), Higashi Hiroshi (AMT & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.), Shimura Koji (ex-High Rise, ex-White Heaven), Okano Futoshi (ex-Suvert Blaze, ex-Ghost) and Kawabata Makoto (Gong, AMT & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.). Be prepared for another delicious dose of highest standard trippy freak outs from outerspace. A cosmic march into the furthest reaches of where no man (or hippy) has gone before. Except Amon Duul II. 'Cause the main part of this disc, the 44 minute title track, has very much of an Amon Duul II's Yeti vibe going on! (And thus it also reminds us of the recently AQ-reviewed My Solid Ground.) Stoner paradise. Very krautrock. A heavy, mantric riff repeating over and over a loooong time. Super hypnotic CD $23 SKU:8638

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O- Acid Motherly Love (psych) -Label:REPOSE "Returning to their Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO moniker, Kawabata Makoto and his fellow psych jam explorers have let loose one of their most varied, extensive discs to date. Acid Motherly Love is a prog rock banquet, which maintains its fuzzy psych credentials without losing a sense of narrative. Take the twenty-one minute three-parter 'Douchebag': it all starts off as a tranquil spoken word piece set against a backdrop of organ and acoustic guitar, only to switch to full-blown hard rocking sonic blitzkrieg, eventually winding down into a lengthy passage of feedback and oscillator tones. It's like the Grateful Dead tackling Rush's 'A Farewell To Kings.' Probably. After all that, there's a bit of a comedown in the shape of 'Traitors With Beautiful Hearts', a sprawling four minutes of disconnected sound elements, and palate-cleansing loopiness that piles into 'Astro Elvis ESP', an all-out fuzz fest and ring modulator workout. Weirdest of all is set closer 'Johnny Johnny Jerusalem', a nutty a cappella piece featuring the kind of sound poem silliness you might hear from a jetlagged Jaap Blonk." --Boomkat CD $21 SKU:8665

ANDROMELOS (ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE RELATED)- ANDROMELOS (modern psych) - Label:EKTRO ANDROMELOS is a psychedelic supergroup formed by Kawabata Makoto (Acid Mothers Temple, Nishinihon, Musica Transonic, Mainliner, Gong...), Yamazaki Maso (Masonna, Space Machine) and Okano Futoshi (Nishinihon, ex-Subert Blaze, ex-Ghost), so you know what to expect CD $23 SKU:8640

BLACK KEYS RELATED HACIENDA - Loud is the Night ( 60s style pop ) -Label:ALIVE "They're Mexican-Americans who are obsessed with the Beach Boys," says Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys). "I told everybody about them" - including Dr. Dog, who guest on the album. - Rolling Stone
There is something to get excited about in south-central Texas. In fact the buzz surrounding San Antonio's Hacienda may signal a rebirth of young rock n' roll - with emphasis on the "roll"- to the country's landscape. Formed by cousins Abraham Villanueva (piano/vocals) and Dante Schwebel (guitar/vocals), together with Abraham's brothers Jaime (drums/vocals) and Rene Villanueva (bass/vocals), this Mexican-American quartet blends a raw yet sophisticated style of pop music with harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles and Beach Boys. As fate would have it, a demo of 6 songs landed in the hands of Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, and the band's life was forever changed. Soon after they were opening for The Black Keys in Austin Texas, as well as for Dr. Dog, gaining some much needed exposure. Under Auerbach's watch, Hacienda would write and arrange more than twenty songs, sending him demos periodically in preparation for their debut album, ultimately recording in Dan's own studio in Akron, Ohio. In order to keep the integrity of the music, "Loud Is The Night" was largely captured live in the room with a helping hand from new friends Scott and Frank of Dr. Dog. With them they worked on existing vocal harmonies and created new ones, greatly embellishing the album. The result is a beautiful collection of songs played with integrity and soul to spare, and while the band is aware of its 60's influences, the music on "Loud is the Night" is far from derivative, and the finished product is modern pop music performed with genuineness and taste. Hacienda will be on the road with Dr. Dog in September and October 08. CD $12 SKU:8723

BLUE CHEER- Outsideinside (70s heavy psych )-Label:AKARMA Reissue on CD of their fantastic 2nd album wich in comparison to their debut is certainly as heavy but more PSYCHEDLEIC. Taken form the original master with ONE UNRELEASED BONUS track. CD $23 SKU:8442

BRIMSTONE HOWL _ We Came in Peace - (with non lp track) Label:ALIVE Get em here first from the Alive /Bompwarehouse, you wont find these anywhere else for a while! Brimstone Howl is a Mid-West foursome described by NME as "Beatles-headed psych-nerds with a taste for razor sharp snake-rock". "We Came In Peace" is the follow-up to "Guts Of Steel" (Alive 2007) an album hailed as "unholy hot-wiring of the Sonics, the Damned and the Blues Explosion" (Magnet) and "cranked lo-fi blues rock from Nebraska's hoodlums" (Uncut). Led by charismatic singer/songwriter John Ziegler and guitarist extraordinaire Nick Waggoner, with Calvin Retzlaff on drums, the boys traveled to Ghetto Recorders in Detroit for a very productive recording session with legendary Jim Diamond. Despite it's cryptic title "We Came In Peace" is another fun explosion of fuzz and American-gothic chit-chatter, with "weird fictional adventure stories, and beginner blues guitar lessons from mongoloids," as they like to describe it. The album is packed with great songs, including the amazing power punk pop "Hopeless Destroyer," the Cramps-worshiper "Child Of Perdition" or the VU-psych influenced "Easy To Dream". Brimstone Howl has been sharing stages with fellow travelers Jay Reatard (who produced one of their first singles), the Black Lips, and King Kahn, among many others, gathering reviews such as this one : "Pumping with hot red blood, they slopped their rock & roll around the room: dirty, gritty, just right. For the finale, the four players became two piggyback stacks. The playing continued as the dueling human towers wobbled about the room, knocking into the lampshades and ending up in a heap of bodies on the floor and a blistering wall of noise. Now THAT'S how you do it." (Orlando Weekly). Brimstone Howl will be touring all through 2008 and 2009. The CD version INCLUDES one bonus track NOT on the VINYL. CD $12 SKU:8615

CREATION - Psychedelic Rose ( 60’s UK )Label:CHERRY RED (UK) "Their songs have been covered by acts as diverse as Ride, Boney M and the Sex Pistols; they impressed Pete Townshend so much that he asked their guitarist to join the already successful Who; said guitarist pioneered the use of the violin bow on guitar strings -- a trick promptly lifted and made famous by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page; they inspired the name of Creation Records, the most influential record label of the '90s; they have been cited as an influence by Paul Weller, Alan McGee, Ride, Pete Townshend, John Lydon and others. Yet The Creation never had a bona fide hit single in either Britain or the U.S. They had a recording career that spanned merely mid-1966 to early 1968 and never -- in their original incarnation -- released an album on either side of the Atlantic. The Creation are pop's quintessential example of Never Mind The Career Width, Feel The Musical Quality. Their compositions 'Makin' Time,' 'Painter Man,' 'Biff Bang Pow,' 'Nightmares,' 'Can I Join Your Band,' 'Life Is Just Beginning,' 'Through My Eyes,' 'How Does It Feel To Feel' and others helped define psychedelia and pop art and are cherished by several different generations of music fans. The Creation were undoubtedly one of the most under-appreciated bands to emerge from the UK during the 1960s, but their legend has grown with time and this album, recorded in 1987 and 1988 and never been released before in any form, is a testament to their enduring legacy. You know the story, you know the legend, this is the long-lost album." CD $19 SKU:8738

DRY RIB- Whose Last Trickle ( DIY ) - Label:MESSTHETICS "D.I.Y. with a guitar-genius/nonsense poet only begins to explain Dry Rib and the projects that followed, but they were one of a tiny handful of D.I.Y./post-punk-era groups who'd probably have sounded the same whether punk had happened or not. And things only got cooler, odder, and more idiosyncratic as Rob Vasey's audio insurgency progressed. Ed Ball of O Level (and later the Times and Teenage Film Stars) saw Dry Rib first in late 1978 and promptly signed them to his new Clockwork label. He writes, 'Dry Rib were a late '70s three piece group of some indefinable power -- not Powerful in the obvious sense, as in everyone slugging out the same riff... More the power of musical and lyrical imagination ... 'Rob Vasey's guitar style of blurred chord stylings coupled with continuous tremolo arm preempted My Bloody Valentine (or anyone else) by the best part of a decade. [He] wasn't like Eric Clapton or Paul Weller in way/shape/form ... Which could only be a good thing because, he superseded these fellows for sheer guitar innovation and songscapes that neither could even conceive of. Rob was ably supported by two equally intelligent musicians -- Andrew Goodwin (one of the best two drummers I've ever played with -- and that includes the so-called shit-hot session guys) and Mike Mullholland (who could make a Fender Precision sound like Entwistle, Matlock or a distressed horsefly!)' Dry Rib's EP received heavy airplay from John Peel, who featured all three tracks: 'Quail Seed,' 'Cruelty of the Victim' and their epic 'Alaska' (the latter and a demo of 'Quail Seed' appear on Messthetics #102) and briskly sold through a thousand-odd copies at the beginning of D.I.Y.'s golden age. They made several further trips to the studio, with no loss of intensity or inventiveness. Rob's career next took a more fluid and improvisational turn in a series of collaborations with various members of the Times' extended family, mostly under the flag of 'as, hem syrup' (the name taken from a nonsense prose piece of Rob's) and the lyrics grew even more fanciful. As with Dry Rib, there's no mistaking any of the material for anyone else's. There's much more of Ed Ball's account in his liner notes (including diary entries from the time) along with every surviving Dry Rib photo, lyrics, the usual daunting ephemera, and 20 songs and 75 minutes of music on the CD." CD $12 SKU:8675

F/I- SPACE MANTRA(space/psych-rock)-Label:LEXICON DEVIL Harsh electronic noise and industrial sounscapes, taking cues from the likes of Blue Cheer, Hawkwind and 70s krautrock. CD $16 SKU:8229

FASSETT, JIM- Symphony of the Birds (experimental) - Label:EM RECORDS EM Records is a w-e-i-r-d Japanese reissue label that is slowly taking the world by storm. Very experimental/eccentric recordings, lovingly re-presented -- all officially licensed from the original artists, with deluxe packaging and sound. Symphony of the Birds is a CD reissue of the historical 1950s LP, featuring a three-track multi-speed tape collage, "Symphony," made by ONLY nature's birdsongs (it's REAL), plus regular-speed and time-stretched field recordings, and explanations from the man himself. Jim Fassett was the musical director of CBS radio in the '50s-'60s, and also famous as the author of another concrete work, Strange to Your Ears in the '50s. The kinda roots of recent field recordings/drones stuff. Total birdsong mania! Huge booklet of photos and (mostly Japanese-only) texts -- so big that EM actually uses a slightly larger-than-normal jewel case to make it fit! CD $24 SKU:8407

FOOLE, DREDD- Kissing the Contemporary Bliss(2CD) ( 70s blues/psych)-Label:FAMILY VINEYARD For over 30 years troubadour walier DAN IRETON has called upon the spirit of 78 shellac blues n' psychedelic Stooges n' Velvets to fuel his guttural, pure soul ethos of the song. Hints at the classic forms of Dylan's Blood On The Tracks, Buckley's Starsailor & the celestial fug of Sun Ra' third-eye vision to create an approach untraveled yet increasingly influential. Kicks up the most outward bound & staggering approaches to Gus Cannon's "Walk Right In" & Robert Johnson's "Stones In My Passway" while offering ear-popping originals colored by ERIKA ELDER's jug blowin' & COOT MOON's ecstatic, reverb dosed banjo. CD $21 SKU:8398

FREEDOM'S CHILDREN-3 CD box Astra/Battle Hymn of the Broken-Hearted Horde/Galactic Vibes (60’s/70s psych)Label:SHADOKS Hymn of the Broken-Hearted Horde/Galactic Vibes 3CD BOX (SHAD 104BOX). Deluxe 3CD box set edition of these albums, previously issued on vinyl by Shadoks. These 3 CDs will also be available separately, but this version puts these together in a heavy cardboard box, like the Blops CD on Shadoks. This box set edition is limited to 300 copies. Shadoks Music presents all three records by Freedom's Children, now collected together, after two years of struggle and hard work with tons of help from collectors in South Africa, England, Austria and the U.S.A. Since all mastertapes were lost in a big fire, they had to be mastered from the original vinyl, using two or three mint copies of each album to make the best possible sounding product. All three albums are the most wanted albums ever from South Africa. Some call them "The Pink Floyd of South Africa," and if the political situation in S.A. at that time would have been easier, they would have had the same status in the international music market as Pink Floyd. Beautifully composed songs, amazing instrumentation, well-crafted guitar work and great singers. The extra-heavy prog sound beats most albums in the same direction coming from the UK or U.S.A. Three absolute masterpieces. CD $58 SKU:8623

FREEDOM’S CHILDREN - Battle Hymn of the Broken-Hearted Horde 60S S AFRICAN PROG PSYCH ) -Label:SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY) This is Freedom's Children's first album, recorded in 1968 in South Africa for EMI. This album has all the wonderful excesses of early progressive rock; the deep meaningful poetry, spoken words, majestic organ-playing, sound effects, choirs, long guitar solos, etc. Ramsay MacKay's unusual Scottish/South African accent guides us through this album of contrasts. From the country sounds of "Country Boy" to the Traffic-style rock of "Judas Queen," this album does not let up for a moment. It rocks, it soothes, it challenges, it even refreshes (thanks to the inclusion of an old Pepsi advertisement). A great album and a mind-blowing debut.

FREEDOM’S CHILDREN- Galactic Vibes ( 70S S AFRICAN PROG PSYCH ) - Label:SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY) This is the third album by South Africa's Freedom's Children, originally released on the Parlophone label. The year is 1971, but the song is "1999." The group is Freedom's and the vibes are galactic. And now just over 30 years later, we can look back at "1999." This is a many-layered album, almost to the point of being cluttered, but this is what makes it interesting. Each time you listen you can hear something new, be it a tone in Brian Davidson's wailing vocals, a riff from Julian Laxton's screaming guitar, a sequence of notes from Barry Irwin's booming bass, the change from sticks to hands on Colin Pratley's awesome drumming, or merely putting your ear right up against the speaker to feel the presence of Ramsay MacKay on the live version of "The Homecoming." The centerpiece of Galactic Vibes is "The Homecoming," which appeared in a shorter version on Astra, but this live version has to be one of South Africa's epic tracks. Recorded live at the Out of Town Club (which, according to a copy of their flyer in the sleeve notes, advertised as a "steak parlor"), the track features a quite stunning and by all accounts legendary drum solo that lasts for the best part of 8 minutes before those dramatic guitar chords. Aside from this monstrous drumfest, the album features some blistering, fuzz-edged guitars on the thundering "That Did It" as well as the quieter and beautiful "Fields And Me." There is also the experimental keyboard piece, "The Crazy World Of Pod: Electronic Concerto," which is just short enough not to become irritating. The orchestration on "About The Dove And His King" adds a beauty and quality sheen to what is quite a rough rock sound, which is due mainly to the inventive recording methods used. With layers of overdubs and no noise reduction, this method created what the sleeve notes describe as a "musical mystical mist of sound." This is a wonderful way to describe the slightly distorted guitars and vague hissing sounds. These guys were breaking barriers not only in South Africa's rather narrow 1970s rock world, but would have broken through numerous perceived limitations on the world stage, had the world bothered to listen. Galactic Vibes is an album that South Africans can be proud of, even 30 years later. It is a great musical achievement that can be hauled out again and again and simply marvelled at.

- This is the third release by Freedom's Children, originally released in 1971.
- "This is one of the best heavy psych albums to come out of South Africa or in fact the world, phased out vocals, heavy as lead thumping rhythms on the bass and drums and guitars that weave in and out of the tracks like a madman on acid. Mind melter!" --Freak Emporium CD $18 SKU:8742

GIL, GILBERTO - Expresso 2222 ( 70’s ) - Label:WATER "Originally released in 1972, Expresso 2222 is Gil's first release since returning to Brazil after a two-year political exile, and the joy is palpable within the grooves. Moving away from the psychedelic tone of his late '60s recordings, Expresso 2222 has a funky and jazzy feel that blends perfectly with Gil's percussive guitar work and soulful vocal delivery. More even and less experimental than previous recordings, this album is still an equal to those that came before, in both its imaginative arrangements and the seamless blend of styles that defined the Tropicalia movement. This is one of Gil's last masterworks, one that many consider to be his best." CD $19 SKU:8769

HIGHER ELEVATION - THE PROTESTANT WORK ETHIC( 60s style garage )Label:Time For Action GERMANY Modish Swedes in windbreakers, 501s, and wraparound shades, The Higher Elevations offer up an appealing take of the 60s, by way of the 80s, here in the 00s. Overall, there's a tough, Sound Affects-era Jam thing happening here, but lots of poetic Smiths-ian jangle, too. Best of all is the intense, yearning, super-catchy "Nights And Days" .wow!

INSECT TRUST- ST LTd ed gtdld card wallet (60S folk.psych)Label:ASH Combining elements of rock, jazz, bluegrass, soul, Dixieland, folk, ragga, blues and practically every genre there is, The Insect Trust's classic debut (recorded in 1968) reveals one major difference between them and almost all other U.S. psych bands of the time -- while the majority were in thrall to Eastern sounds, they sound resolutely homegrown. Despite featuring banjos, fiddles and bottleneck guitars, the band still sounded absolutely contemporary, with superb tunes, gorgeous vocals and some mindblowing freakout passages. Tuneful, intelligent and highly musical, they truly forged something new out of the past, and this is one of the most beguilingly strange and original rock albums ever recorded. Housed in a unique gatefold card-wallet format in a numbered edition of 1000. CD $19 SKU:8621

It yielded the hit single 'Marianne', and is widely seen as one of the most important Japanese rock albums of the era. The song 'Vacant World' was famously banned from Japanese airwaves due to lyrical content. The Jacks played in a distinct musical style fused with ambient psychedelic, surf, folk and jazz. The group had a dark, introspective sound with an exploratory, improvisational edge and sometimes headed into moody instrumental excursions. The Jacks typically employed reverb, tremolo and subtle fuzz-guitar and also utilized the vibraphone, organ and wind instruments such as the flute. This album features at number 42 in Julian Copes Japrocksampler Top 50. CD $23 SKU:6329

JENNIFER GENTLE- Ectoplasmic Garden Party DblCD(psych)-Label:LEXICON DEVIL Italian band, probably one of the best psychedelic bands today. Sounding like a walking, talking history of left field rock music, deconstructed and reconstructed. Fans of Faust, Van Dyke Parks, Captain Beefheart, Funkadelic, Bongwater, Godz and Residents should enjoy this. CD $19 SKU:8230

KHAZAD DOOM-Cherry Town ( 60s garage-psych) - Label:HALLUCINATIONS Recorded in 1967 prior to the legendary Level 6 1/2 album, this is a brilliant album of fantasy Beatles-esque garage psychedelia. The whole package sounds and looks brilliant CD $16 SKU:8737

LOLLIPOP SHOPPE -Just Colour (60s garage)-Label:REVOLA One of the must have garage rock classics! Originally known as The Weeds and featuring Fred 'Deep Soul' Cole, The Lollipop Shoppe sound amazingly modern! After The Weeds signed to UNI Records, their new manager, the infamous 'Lord' Tim Hudson, insisted they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current trend of bizarrely named bubblegum groups. The band's actual recordings are hardly bubblegum, but instead a mix of crunching garage rock and wild psychedelia. The album and its single, 'You Must Be a Witch,' are period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The Doors, and appeared in the biker movie Angels from Hell. They were to regroup as The Weeds once out of 'Lord' Tim's clutches, and Fred Cole was to lead cult band Dead Moon. But it is for this, the classic Just Colour, that The Lollipop Shoppe are justly acclaimed. Wonderfully re-mastered in top Rev-Ola style and with lovely packaging that features plenty of rare photos and memorabilia!" CD $19.5 SKU:8630

MCCULLY WORKSHOP - The Best of Mcully Workshop-(60's psych ) Label:FRESH Collection of best tracks by South African 60's PSYCHEDELIC GARAGE/BEAT/R&B GROUP. Obviously influenced by the many British R&B band of the 60's (KINKS, YARDBIRDS, PRETTY THINGS, etc). CD $23 SKU:8557

MCKINLEY, WILSON: - Spirit of Elijah (Xian psych)- Label:EREBUS Their really good one, west coasty Christian rock reminiscent of the best tracks on the Rainbow Promise LP and solid all through. Well-written songs combine perfectly with the jammy SF ballroom sound popular among the Jesus Music bands, recalling the mellow aspects of Moby Grape in particular. The epic, spine-chilling title track is especially good. A loose, understated live in the basement recording adds to the appeal. This album is undoubtedly one of the classics from the era." - Acid Archives. As with all Erebus Records titles this was remastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. It is presented here for the first time on CD CD $21 SKU:8627

MIGHTY KONG- All I Wanna Do Is Rock ( 70s rock ) - Label:AZTEC MUSIC (AUSTRALIA) Aussie rock icon Ross Wilson has been at the helm of two of Australia's biggest bands (Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock) plus one of our more obscure: Mighty Kong. Mighty Kong lasted less than a year, but they did leave us with one terrific and underrated album: All I Wanna Do Is Rock. When Daddy Cool broke up in August 1972, Wilson and Ross Hannaford set about forming a new band that would explore a heavier style that harked back to the pre-DC days of Sons Of The Vegetal Mother and The Party Machine. After some initial changes that at one stage included Tim Gaze (Tamam Shud/Kahvas Jute) and Gulliver Smith (Company Caine), the final line-up was settled with Wilson, Hannaford, Russell Smith (Company Caine), Tim Partridge (Company Caine) and Ray Arnott (Spectrum). Signing to the newly-formed Wizard Records, the band recorded All I Wanna Do Is Rock with American producer John Fischbach. The album came out in December 1973 along with the single 'Callin' All Cats (The Cats Are Callin').' With a mixture of funky hard rockers like 'Hard Drugs (Are Bad For You)' and 'Homesick And Horny' and two terrific Gulliver Smith/Russell Smith penned ballads 'Some Other New Address' and 'With A Smile Like That (How Could We Refuse)' Mighty Kong seemed poised for success. But, despite some enthusiastic reviews and excellent live shows, Mighty Kong were still overshadowed by the spectre of Daddy Cool. Wizard's decision to release a Daddy Cool live album and a swag of DC singles just before the release of the Mighty Kong album did not help matters either. The success of the Daddy Cool material eventually led to a one-off Daddy Cool appearance at the 1974 Sunbury Festival. Their performance was so well-received that, two weeks later, Daddy Cool reformed and Mighty Kong were no more. Still -- it makes an excellent 'what if' story and this reissue is a reminder of the varied repertoire from one of Australia's all-time talents. Of course, after Daddy Cool broke up for a second time in 1975, Wilson formed Mondo Rock and had another successful run. Aztec Music will be reissuing Mondo Rock's debut Primal Park in the near(?) future. Our deluxe reissue of All I Want To Do Is Rock has been digitally remastered by Gil Matthews, liner notes by Ian M Farlane, housed in our usual 6-panel digipak with many rare photos. Two bonus tracks -- the single version of 'Callin' All Cats' and the previously-unreleased studio jam of 'All I Wanna Do Is Rock.'" CD $24 SKU:8741

MODERN SHIT- Will Make You Ill digi -Label:ALGA MARGHEN (ITALY) "After surfacing briefly in 2007 in a very limited number of copies on slim-jewel-box together with the Artcoustics catalog, Alga Marghen is now proud to present the final edition of Modern Sh*t, a very singular chapter in the Amos/It's War Boys/Milk from Cheltenham/Homosexuals history. Directly taken from the original It's War Boys catalog, here is one of the most obscure sonic works of the early 1980s, Modern Shit! First 'issued' on tape (cat No. 21) this work circulated only privately among the close friends of the label and was never officially distributed. Actually it represents one of the most intense and experimental outputs of this creative London period. The idea was to create a contemporary 'non-stop,' vaguely in emulous contradiction to product by people like Cerrone and Biddulph (1970s disco queens). Lepke and Amos, the two minds behind this project (and 2/3 of the Milk from Cheltenham adventures), each constructed a half hour near-continuous non-stop using only the foulest materials. In those days they had their 8-track studio in a moldy basement below Brixton Road, South London and they happened to occasionally record some awful wannabe pop bands. It was a truly horrible experience but with a good side. Almost as soon as the idiots left the studio, Lepke and Amos would start re-mixing their music, often stealing and sticking it (suitably mangled) onto new tracks, the basis material for Modern Shit* The CD is presented in a new digipack edition with full color cover. Final edition of 500 copies." CD $21 SKU:8674

Recording ground breaking DIY singles together as the TV Personalities, O Level and the Teenage Filmstars in the late ‘70s, this triumvirate of pop entrepreneurs later launched or co-founded the Whaam!, Artpop!, Creation and Revola labels — quite literally inventing a syndicate of sound and ideas that reverberated gently throughout the ‘80s, violently throughout the ‘90s and inescapably today. PERFORMING FERRETS- No One Told Us ( DIY ) - Label:MESSTHETICS "Twenty-eight songs from one of D.I.Y.'s iconic bands, including most of their astonishingly scarce LP, which music-historian / journo / D.I.Y.- enthusiast Johan Kugelberg described as 'the most seminal LP to come out of DIY ... Fantastic over enthusiastic juvenilia of an almost supernatural beauty.' Whether or not the name was ironic, The Performing Ferrets were very much a performing band -- whose songs clearly grew out of the way they interacted. A curious rhythm, an engaging riff, an arresting lyrical snippet, and frequently a Melodica tumble and writhe, ferretlike, into song / groove / experiments that stood unique on the indie post-punk scene. The Ferrets started out in Maidstone, Kent, in 1978 but they parlayed academic careers in Manchester, Portsmouth, Nottingham and Preston into appearances all over the U.K.. John Peel once lamented that every gig he did there seemed to be a Ferret there 'clutching a demo tape in its sweaty paw'. There's a touch of The Fall and the TV Personalities, a little garage and Beat, hints of the rhythm-propelled sounds of the Monochromes, Feelies, Beefheart, Gang of 4/Delta 5 or Diagram Brothers, and a dry wit that had more to do with the Ferrets' favorite authors and comedians than anyone from the class of '77, but the Ferrets' response to D.I.Y. was all their own. In 'Mandolin' (performed on a detuned mandolin that sounds like a toy piano) they complain, 'The independent market / Is just a bring-and-buy sales ... God help those who do it small scale / You've got to watch those pennies ... You're bound to lose pounds / We just can't make money (oh no, oh no!)' Their conclusion? They'd just as soon give their records away for free (though the planned free flexi never happened). No One Told Us collects 28 tracks from 1980-82, although only three rather inscrutable tunes saw wide distribution back in the day on their lone Peel-championed 45. They also released two cassettes (perhaps 200 each) and 300 odd copies of their self-titled LP. After two years in Manchester the Ferrets wound down when two of them ended up in Miaow with Cath Carroll, another took over the editorship of Manchester's legendary City Fun, and a fourth got a doctorate in immunology. The complete saga's in the 12-page booklet, along with photos, artifacts, and almost 80 minutes of the Ferrets' finest on the CD." CD $13 SKU:8676

QUADRAJETS-Alabama Hip Skakes ( punk) -Label:SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY Southern by the grace of God and not the least bit shy about reminding you of it, the Quadrajets may have been weaned on punk rock, but industrial-strength hard rock has an equal place in their hearts, and you can hear the two colliding like a pair of freight trains on the band's second full-length, 1996's Alabama Hip Shake. Cranking three big ol' guitars through amps jacked up to God knows what, the Quadrajets suggest some sort of unholy alliance between Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Damned. On Alabama Hip Shake, they not only honor both sides of the equation with equal enthusiasm, but sound as if they could outrun them both on a good day. Though the Quadrajets fail to come up with a tune as good as either "Neat Neat Neat" or "Gimmie Back My Bullets," "The Rosedale Sons of Kong," "40 wt. Dope," and "Dixie Speedway" all roar big, loud, and mean, and with more than a bit of a grin (or a smirk) around the corners. While Neil Young may never have figured on "Computer Age" sounding the way it does here, somehow he might not mind. A dozen servings of high-speed noise with both heart and muscle to spare, Alabama Hip Shake is not an album for the timid at heart, but the Quadrajets wanted it that way, and if you're looking for a band and a disc that brings the rock and brings it big time, this is where you need to go. RODRIGUEZ- Cold Fact ( 60s psych ) - Label:LIGHT IN THE ATTIC One of the lost classics of the ‘60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in color and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion, and, of course, ‘jumpers, coke, sweet mary jane.1 The album is Cold Fact, and what1s more intriguing is that its maker ‹ a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez ‹ was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working on a Detroit building site, unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. Sixto Diaz Rodriguez was born in 1942 to Mexican immigrant parents in Detroit, Michigan. He recorded Cold Fact ‹ his debut album ‹ in 1969, and released it in March 1970. It1s crushingly good stuff, filled with tales of bad drugs, lost love, and itchy-footed songs about life in late ‘60s inner-city America. Now, Light In The Attic is set to commit Cold Fact to CD for audiences in North America, UK, Europe, and Asia, who can finally find out why ‹ halfway across the world ‹ Rodriguez is spoken of in the same reverent tones as The Doors, Love and Jimi Hendrix.2 This first official reissue has been gloriously remastered and includes a deluxe, 36-page book with new essays, interviews with Rodriguez, and full lyrics. CD $16 SKU:8734

ROOSEVELT SYKES/VICTORIA SPIVEY -- Grind It (Detroit blues) - Label:ALIVE Two legendary giants of the blues captured live at the 1973 Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival. Pianist Roosevelt Sykes plays and sings "Dirty Mother For You," "Night Time Is The Right Time," "Driving Wheel" and other classic songs he first recorded in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Blues queen Victoria Spivey contributes terrific versions of her own early masterpieces "Black Snake Blues," "Detroit Moan," "Low Down Man Blues" ("You're a rank stud") and others, with backing by the Brooklyn Blues Busters. This is the real thing. The release includes booklet with comprehensive liner notes plus rare & unreleased photos. CD $11 SKU:2222

SNAKEGRINDER - And the Shredded Fieldmice + 4 Bonus Tracks ( 70s psych ) - Label:Obscure Oxide "Every burg in the '70s that had a steady supply of weed and electricity undoubtedly provided a birthing ground for the formation of bands influenced by the likes of Jerry Garcia and Lowell George, and the Delaware area was no different. What was different was that our subjects-at-hand got it together and in 1977 released an unassuming document for posterity, containing nothing but original, winding (dare we say "snake-like"?) compositions and good vibes throughout. Since then, the album has garnered accolades from the Acid Archives crowd and so we felt the time was right to give the group's efforts a proper (and properly licensed from the band) presentation, with an "old-style" heavy mini-LP sleeve and thick booklet containing pics, gig posters, song lyrics and liner notes by producer and longtime fan GREGOR ALLIGATOR. In addition, we've added a half-hour of unreleased live tracks from the same era, and everything you hear (album and bonus) was transferred from the mastertapes." CD $19 SKU:8709

SPRING (UK)- Second Harvest(70s prog ) - Label:AKARMA Until now, the only sorry thing about "Spring" was that they only released this 1 album. Or, at least, that most people thought it was their only album. Thanks to Akarma their second recording is actually available on CD, after may years of limbo. If you love early Genesis, King Crimson, Moody Blues, etc. this is a must. Not that "Spring" sounds like or copies those bands, they have there own distinct sound. And just like for the first one, this is without doubt one of the finest albums from the 70s. CD $24 SKU:8441

STUD- ST (70’s prog ) -Label:ESOTERIC STUD were formed in 1970 by RICHARD McCRACKEN and JOHN WILSON (from the recently disbanded band TASTE who featured RORY GALLAGHER) and JIM CREGAN (of BLOSSOM TOES and later in FAMILY). The album they recorded for Deccas DERAM label was an amalgam of rock and jazz and was an outstanding "progressive" album of its time. The sessions also featured guest appearances by POLI PALMER (of FAMILY) and JOHN WEIDER (ex-ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS and FAMILY). Although Stud never achieved the acclaim they deserved, their debut album remains highly sought after by aficionados of Progressive Rock. CD $23 SKU:8249

TEENAGE FILMSTARS- Star (DIY)-Label:ARTPOP "November 1991. Creation Records release Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Three months later Creation Records release Star by Teenage Filmstars. Rumoured to have been recorded by an aggregation of various Teenage Fanclubbers and Bloody Valentiners, this mysterious album had journalists and pop stars from Britain and America fascinated by its sound. Wherever My Bloody Valentine have roared throughout the universe the Teenage Filmstars echo has followed, but not blindly. Where the MBV sound is the well-controlled experiment from the lab, the Teenage Filmstars set their rocket to unknown planets -- what is Star? An alchemist's philosophy stone thrown surreptitiously into space? It was in fact, the work of one Edward Ball, in between label duties for Creation Records and recording for the label. 'The Master Of Brinkmanship,' as one taste maker of the time described him. This reissue features four previously unreleased extra tracks, including an early version of Edward Ball's hit single Love Is Blue(!) . The 16-page booklet contains a dissertation of Creation period Edward Ball '88 to '91 by Edward Ball 2008, with full production notes and anecdotes about the label. Lavishly illustrated throughout." TEENAGE JESUS & THE JERKS- Shut Up and Bleed - Label:CHERRY RED (UK): “”The seminal no-wave band Teenage and Jesus and The Jerks were lead by primal screamer and guitarist Lydia Lunch, an individual who has fought her artistic way through the decades, always true to her own vision and always brutally honest. In early 1978, artist and producer Brian Eno attended a series of shows put on to benefit the Artists Space in Soho and influenced Island Records to finance an anthology LP featuring the four strongest bands ‹ Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, The Contortions, Mars and DNA. The resulting recording, entitled No New York and produced by Eno, remains as one of the most impressive and extraordinarily bold debuts of the time. Here we compiled all Teenage Jesus and The Jerks recordings, alongside some NEVER previously released live material. Simultaneous to Teenage Jesus, Lunch formed Beirut Slump, released one single and recorded an albums worth of material, which is also included on this remarkable release” CD $19 SKU:8670

Fifteen tracks of Fahey reading are included here. "A pioneering acoustic guitarist" -ROLLING STONE CD $15 SKU:8251

VALENTE, DINO- ST ( 60s psych folk ) Label:RPM (UK) A fascinating enigma of the San Francisco psychedelic scene, Valente is most famed as the author of the song 'Get Together.' This definitive '60s love-and-peace anthem was recorded on the Jefferson Airplane's first album, and taken into the Top Ten by the Youngbloods. Valente was an original member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and his one off solo single in 1964, a folk pop song called 'Birdses' became the inspiration for Gene Clark to name his new band the Birdses, amended of course, to the Byrds, because of his admiration for Valente's single 'In 1968,' following a spell in jail for drug possession, he got a deal with Epic Records, recording an album produced by Bob Johnston (most famous for overseeing much of Bob Dylan's classic '60s output). It was idiosyncratic even within the psychedelic community. Valente sang elliptical, stream-of-consciousness hippyisms without much in the way of narrative, beginning, or end, but with an evocative lyricism. The accompaniment is mostly stripped down guitar playing pleasingly haunting minor folk-jazz acoustic chords, swelled by wads of studio reverb. In March this year, Mojo's 67 Lost Albums You Must Own article included this album: 'On leaving Quicksilver Messenger Service after changing his name to avoid the taxman, the chemically deranged but incredibly charming Dino Valente knocked off this beautifully elongated acoustic ramble, then promptly disappeared. Emotional, aching and gloriously daft in places, its stream of lo-fi consciousness spawned generations of bedroom strumming by moody suicidal peaceniks. All a bit intense on the surface, it's wonderfully engaging even today. (DH)' RPM make this album available once with this timely re-press and in a package with an insightful essay by Nina Antonia. In the current climate of Devendra Banhart, James Yorkeston et al, Valente sounds neither out of place nor out of time CD $18 SKU:8736

VILE, KURT- Constant Hitmaker (garage) - Label:GULCHER “Philadelphian one-man band (and terrible pun merchant) Kurt Vile kicks off this excellent record with a bit of a lo-fi pop anthem: 'Freeway' is a simple enough guitar and drum machine affair, but there's a raw, energetic romanticism that has something quietly classic about it. The line "I've got a freeway mind" instantly taps into the tropes of great Americana songwriters, and the fact that this is all strung together in a punky, DIY setting only serves to make the record more effective and heartstring-tugging. Not all of Constant Hitmaker features such all-out pop though: you'll find weird sketchy pieces that sound like the emissions of some far out supermarket synth drones, all of which confirms just how cobbled together and erratic the album is. At times this record sounds like some freakish combination of Ariel Pink and Atlas Sound, while at others it's all about straight-up slacker songwriting, as on 'Classic Rock In Spring' or 'Slow Talkers'. Thoroughly weird and unfocussed, but not without considerable charms.” (Boomka) CD $12 SKU:8619

VON, RONNIE -A Máquina Voadora (70s psych)-Label:DISCOS MARIPOSA “The last and probably best album from Vons incredible psychedelic trilogy from the years 1969-1970. We said some time ago that of the three key albums from this long-time Brazilian pop-star, that the first was the best, but hearing this again suggests that its time to revise that opinion. It1s true that all three albums make it clear that the psychedelic effects of Tropicalia were not confined to Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Gal Costa. Yes, Von often takes a poppier angle in getting to a similar fuzz-guitar driven musical landscape, but not only does he get there all the same, on this album the pop is minimal, and the fuzz supreme. Its difficult to describe how balanced this album is, as it features truly one-of-a-kind songs, which include any number of effects and treatments of Ronnie1s enchanting voice, all of which matches perfectly with the mysterious and melancholic songs on the album. Listen to it and let yourself fly into the far reaches of Ronnie Vons dreamy, twisted mind. Comes with a fulsome 20-page booklet that includes a history of Vons career (sort of), as well as lyrics” CD $19 SKU:8629

VON, RONNIE - A Misteriosa Luta (70s psych) -Label:DISCOS MARIPOSA .. do Reino de Parassempre Contra- 3Second part of the amazing psychedelic trilogy by Brazilian star Ronnie Von, recorded between 1969-1970. There1s little doubt that the three albums which comprise Von1s brief psychedelic legacy are not only a memorable break from his multitude of pop outings, but more importantly, stand as three of the more compelling psychedelic recordings to emerge from any single artist of the era. This record is a collection of 12 psychedelic pop songs, with unique arrangements, featuring violins, reverse guitars, brass, piano and various psychedelic effects. Even more innovative than the previous album (already reissued by Discos Mariposa) and nothing like what you might have expected from someone who is more pop star and psychedelic guru. Some songs are entrancing epics, some Tropicalia, and others just pop/psych masterpieces. Includes the entire album, plus 4 bonus tracks. CD $19 SKU:8660

WILSON, J. FRANK -& THE CAVALIERS- Last Kiss: Definitive Collection (60’s pop) -Label:CICADELIC From San Angelo, Texas, their recording of "Last Kiss" went to number one and two in November of 1964 on the Cash Box and Billboard top 100! "Last Kiss" was recorded along with all the other tracks on this Cd at Accurate Sound Studios. Some of these recordings first appeared in 1998 on the Cd entitled "Last Kiss Sessions" but the bulk of these recordings have remained unreleased since their inception over forty years ago and they never sounded better Taken straight from the first generation tapes that were stored at Accurate Sound Studios, many of the tracks are alternate versions, different mixes and outtakes, which when combined make up for a intoxicating mix of great Texas music from the golden era of rock and roll. CD $16 SKU:8219

WIZARDS FROM KANSAS - ST CARD WALLET (70’s psych) - Label: PHOENIX IMPORT Actually hailing from Kansas, the Wizard's were an obscure country-influenced outfit whose debut album featured some fine versions of classics from the period, including Buffy St.Maries Codine, as well as some excellent originals such as Misty Mountainside, Country Dawn and She Rides With Witches . The original five-piece band enjoyed considerable local suceess, eventually finding themselves playing the Fillomre East, a gig which lead to a number of offers of record deals which the group turned down. However, towards the end of 1969 Mercury Records finally wore them down, and the band signed for the label, with their eponymous first (and only album) appearing in the summer of 1970. During the albums recording, several of the band members decided they preferred playing jazz and duly departed to persue their interests, leaving Mercury with a new album but no band to promote it. Predictably, the label lost interest and the record sunk without trace. There is a lot of fine stuff on this album, which is both extremely collectable and highly recommended CD $19 SKU:8524

ALLERGIC TO FLOWERS- Garage Beat & Popsike - Part 2 1965-68 -Label:RPM (UK) "Part two of the first time thematic overview of West Coast independent label Challenge Records. The label hit paydirt in early 1966 when it scored a coast-to-coast hit with The Knickerbockers outstandingly energetic rave up 'Lies.' This riff on The Beatles sound could actually have been The Beatles. Its inclusion on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets set 'Lies' in stone as a all-time classic. Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike celebrates this and the other nuggets that Challenge issued from 1965 to 1968. There's The Brogues paint-peeling punk rocker 'Don t Shoot Me Down' -- the band featured future members of San Francisco legends Quicksilver Messenger Service. Also heard are more irresistible, rockin' and melodic high-energy gems by The Knickerbockers, the absolutely incredible psychedelic punk of Florida band We The People, the tough-as-nails Lindy Blaskey and the Lavells and the superb psychedelic harmonies of Fenwyck's 'Mindrocker.' And then there's the folk rocking and punkish sides recorded by Gene Vincent with Glenn Campbell, as well as The Jefferson Handkerchief's hippy novelty 'I'm Allergic To Flowers.' COMPCD $19 SKU:8666

“Power pop was one of those things that just had to be, somehow--an attempt to recapture the giddy feeling of '60s pop with the energy of punk. So how come it wasn't new wave, anyway? Simply put, to a lot of people, it was. And here, in one place, you can hear some of the early (and a few later) tracks that defined the genre. "Early" often translates as crap ideas and execution, and of the 26 tracks on this compilation, there are more than a few that fit that category--The Romantics, for example. But there are some tidy little things on this release--The Plimsouls (possibly the best power pop band ever), 20/20, and the eternal Shoes. Cheap guitars, three chords, and enough enthusiasm to run a nuclear power plant; funny how the basics of rock & roll never change--only the tunes and the tie widths. --Chris Nickson

This compilation chronicles the style that happened right after punk rock, when some of the bands learned how to play their instruments a little better and started borrowing melodies and harmonies from old '60s pop records. This marriage of melody and energy spawned a couple years' worth of exciting music and a lot of it happened on Bomp during the years 1979-1981. Every one of these 25 songs is a bona-fide classic, including bands like The Romantics, The Real Kids, The Flamin' Groovies, Shoes, 20/20, The Nerves, Pointed Sticks, The Zeros, The Last, and The Plimsouls. These are mostly tracks not otherwise available on CD, and a couple never never been released before in this country. Includes lots of photos and info. (Greg Shaw) COMPCD $11 SKU:8708

COMPLETE HAVOC SINGLES:'71-'73 - DBL CD (70s psych/prog) - Label: AZTEC MUSIC psych, prog, and beer-soaked festival boogie, all refracted through the weird, unique Australian prism.Melbourne's short lived Havoc records label ran from 1971 to 1973 and released landmark releases from some of Australia's greatest ever bands. The monster selling Aztecs Live! Aztecs drummer Gil Matthews was the house engineer / producer for Havoc and produced all nineteen singles and five albums (including his own release Little Dove / Gils Thing). LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- VA Mexican Psychedelic Music (60’s, 70’s) - Label:QDK GERMANY The most recent volume of the Love, Peace & Poetry series, Mexican Psychedelic Music, takes as its focus what was one aspect of our second collection in this series, Latin American Psychedelic Music. While there are some parallels between the evolution of rock and roll in the US and Mexico, the stories are out of synch with each other in interesting ways. In the US, the first wave of rock and roll presented a challenge to longstanding racial divisions and repressed sexuality that was fought off (by 1960 Elvis was in the Army, Jerry Lee Lewis in exile, Chuck Berry in prison and Little Richard turned to Jesus) and replaced by the mostly bland and neutered pop of singers like Fabian, Dion, Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon and Pat Boone (if you've ever wonder what music might sound like in Hell listen to Pat Boone's covers of Little Richard; possibly the most frightening music ever made). The history of Mexican pop music remains calm and fairly controversy free through the 1950s and into the late 1960s. The economic prosperity that fueled the Baby Boom generation in the United States didn't exist for Mexican youth, nor was Mexico as racially volatile or sexually repressed. In the 1950's the culture of the United States was far more shook up by Elvis and his gyrating army than was Mexico. Rock and roll became dangerous in Mexico when it began to be mixed with a challenge to the political status quo. Tracks from rare LPs by The Flying Karpets, Grupo Ciruela, Los Ovnis, La Onda De Survival, and Nahuatl help complete our tour through the various climates of 1960s-1970s Mexican psychedelia, and readily demonstrate the origins of a musical culture that continues on into contemporary times in the many bands that make up the active Mexican music scene here in the new century COMPCD $19 SKU:8613

PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND- VOL 14 ( 70s psych prog ) -Label:Garden of Delights Still plenty of greatness to unearth in the Psychedelic Underground -- just the sort of tripped-out grooves we've really come to love from this well-priced series! Some of the work here is as heavy on jazzy elements as it is psychedelic ones -- making for a great blend that's a bit more organic at times than you might expect -- a world-ranging approach to the styles that really keeps things interesting, and which nicely breaks past simple cliches of psychedelia. Plus, many of the tracks are of European origin, and from the 70s -- and they've got key proggish elements as well, especially on some of the jazzier numbers. Titles include "Summer 79" by Gravestone, "Arctic Ocean" by Pancake, "Back On My Hill" by Faithful Breath, "Ala Dalona" by Emma Myldenberger, "Question" by Joy Unlimited, "Bolero" by Aqua, and "Where Is Your Home Town COMPCD $10 SKU:8718

DIRT ROAD TO PSYCHEDELIA - Austin Texas During the 60’s - Label: NTSC R1 format D: Scott Conn
Janis Joplin the folk singer? Conn gives you photos and vocals to prove it as he traces the musical arc of the 1960s in Austin. Forget the oft-repeated Armadillo World Headquarters legend; this is what came before. The decade begins with the country/folk movement and builds to the psychedelic sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators, Conqueroo, and Shiva's Headband. The drug-infused scene's new headquarters was the Vulcan Gas Company, a freak fest just blocks from the Capitol on Congress, where old-school blues musicians like Muddy Waters mixed with a younger generation in full revolt. The film takes an interesting twist by including interviews with an Austin policeman from the era bent on eradicating drugs from the scene. Conn's film is a love letter to a time period that seems quaint and innocent in retrospect. Longtime Austinites and curious newcomers alike will find this story, with its wonderfully grainy Super-8 footage, a righteous treat. - Joe O'Connell DVD $20 SKU:8787

BARRACUDAS - Drop Out With The Barracudas GREEN VINYL LTD ED -Label:VOXX "This London-based Anglo-American band, whose members include Jeremy Gluck (vocals), Robin Wills (guitar), David Buckley (bass), and Nick Turner (drums), was formed in 1979. Thematically, the Barracudas pushed hard a Southern California surf-rock image on their debut -- there's the cover photo, for one, and then there's a good chunk of the songs. Titles like the demi-hit singles "Summer Fun," "California Lament," "On the Strip," and "Surfers Are Back" are self-explanatory, while the deliciously campy "His Last Summer," detailing one dude's final big wave with Brit-accented asides, has got to win an award for being one of rock's best fake-tragedy stories. However, the Barracudas were more accurately a sharp balance between the harder-edge of new wave power pop and a freewheeling, mid-1960s L.A. revivalism. Rather than peeling off Dick Dale or Ventures-style riffs, or even trying much for the Beach Boys' early sound, the foursome combined some surf-tinged work with the Byrds' ringing exuberance, Love's more frazzled early garage stomps, and the kind of punk collected on Nuggets. Generally speaking, though, one song title sums up the entire fun spirit of Drop Out: "I Wish It Could Be 1965 Again." - All Music Guide LP $13 SKU:2112

BBQ - Tie Your Noose PURPLE VINYL -Label:BOMP Records One of Greg Shaw's last signings on BOMP records, and the the latest project from Mark Sultan (from the KING KAHN & BBQ Show, and Les Sexareenos), a man who has slept in the garage all his life. BBQ is not a group, it's the best one-man band since Wilbert Harrison (and no, we're not forgetting the Legendary Stardust Cowboy), doing a raw, soul-shaking style of pre-frat '50s/ early '60s party music--pre-frat frat rock. Take our word for it: with this crazy sound he's puttin' down, you can't sit down! A superb album. LP $12 SKU:8746

BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES -Every Damn Time LTD ED of 500 on purple vinyl-Label:ALIVE The debut album by this amazing punk-ass blues duo is BACK IN STOCK! "Black Diamond Heavies singer John Wesley Myers doesn't growl. Tom Waits growls. Joe Cocker growls. Myers barks like a man who's had his throat ripped out by a wolf. He gargles the thick blues drawl of a man who has never inhaled without a Marlboro Red in his gob, which is partly why 'Every Damn Time' is so damn brilliant. Calling themselves "a punk-ass blues duo", the Tennessee-hailing group have produced a debut of filthy Southern blues that makes The Black Keys seem like choirboys. Accompanying Myers' roar is his Hammond organ, grooving about on down-tempo tracks like 'Signs' and the bitter broken heart of 'All To Hell', before honky-tonk jiving through 'White Bitch''s anti-drugs preach of "F-ck cocaine!". At full steam, 'Every Damn Time' could soundtrack a Wild West train heist. When notched down, it's darker, moodier and even better. A fabulous debut." - Stuart Stubbs/NME LP $13 SKU:8614

BLACK LIPS - I Did Not Know the Forest Spirit Made the Flowers Grow- PURPLE VINYL LTD - Label:BOMP Records The fabulous second album by one of the leading bands of the new garage scene. Wallows in the same glorious mud of reverb and gothic tales! Ltd edition LP $12 SKU:8745

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE - Just Like Kicking Jesus 180 GRAM- Label: A RECORDS This mini album of 5 songs (4 never released before) runs over 27 minutes, and was recorded in Reykjavik. The first track of this release features the vocals of Icelandic artist & film maker Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir. The Brian Jonestown Massacre are undertaking an extensive world tour beginning in June 2008. The Brian Jonestown Massacre has been somewhat of a musical commune for many respected musicians over the years, a band from the 1990s that has spurned other great bands ever since. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Warlocks, The Silver Rockets, The Black Angels, The Raveonettes, The Dilettantes (to name a few) are all part of this musical family tree. Indeed, this is a band that has witnessed many incarnations, since its inception in San Francisco in 1995. This is a split label release between 12 Tonar (Iceland's number one independent label originally) and "a records" Anton Newcombe's own record label. 180 gram vinyl, limited to 1000 copies. LP $21 SKU:8570

BRIMSTONE HOWL - We Came in Peace Ltd to 500 - Label:ALIVE Brimstone Howl is a Mid-West foursome described by NME as "Beatles-headed psych-nerds with a taste for razor sharp snake-rock". First LP PRESSING is on PURPLE VINYL limited to 500 COPIES. LP $13 SKU:8720

BUBBLE PUPPY - A GATHERING OF PROMISES ( 60s acid psych ) - Label:SUNDAZED In 1969, Texas acid-psych warlords the Bubble Puppy burst onto the U.S. Top 20 with "Hot Smoke and Sasafrass," the slashing, frenzied 2:33 freakout that kicks off the bands brain-bending debut, A Gathering of Promises. Signed to Houstons legendary International Artists imprint, the foursome were label mates of such hallowed acts as the 13th Floor Elevators and the Red Krayola. But A Gathering of Promises, the groups sole International Artists album, stands out from the rest of the roster with its rich vocal harmonies and heavier, Cream/Hendrix/Who sound. Descended from Corpus Christi garage kings the Bad Seeds, the Bubble Puppys trippedout calling card was its combination of soaring, fuzz-drenched guitars, frantic drumming, stop-on-a-dime arrangements, and tight, graceful harmonies. The Bubble Puppy may have been a one-hit wonder (and what a hit!) but after a trip through the manic "Lonely," the cryptically twisting "Ive Got to Reach You," and the majestic, guitar-searing "Hurry Sundown," any psych fan will be left scratching their head and wondering why-if they still have a head to scratch, that is. Track Listing: Hot Smoke and Sasafrass / Todds Tune / Ive Got to Reach You / Lonely / A Gathering of Promises / Hurry Sundown / Elizabeth / It's Safe to Say / Road to St. Stephens /Beginning LP $23 SKU:8425

CANNED HEAT - VINTAGE (+1)(60s bluesrock)-Label:LILITH Canned Heat was formed in 1965 by Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/harmonica/vocals), and Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals). Before hitting the charts in 1968 with their version of Jim Odens "On The Road Again" (#20 in the USA, # 10 in the UK), here is how they sounded in 1966 when R&B pioneer Johnny Otis produced their first recordings. A perfect match, considering that Wilson and Hite were avid record collectors and blues aficionados, chosing to stay close to the originals on their versions of classics by Muddy Waters "Got My Mojo Working", Willie Dixons "Spoonful" and "Pretty Thing", John Lee Hookers "Louise" and "Dimples", and Elmore James "Rollin' and Tumblin'. Features bonus track "Going Up The Country". LP $25 SKU:8649

CHILDISH, BILLY -& HOLLY GOLIGHTLY- In Blood (punk ) -Label:DAMAGED GOODS BILLY has been releasing records since 1979, HOLLY has been releasing records since 1990, in 1999 they got together for a collaborative effort which originally came out in the USA on Wabana records. IN BLOOD is a great album, pretty much ignored in Europe the first time around, its subtitled ONE CHORD! ONE SONG! ONE SOUND! But its so much more than that, tracks like Demolition Girl & Step Out roar out of your stereo, really great dirty one chord (with many notes) blues songs with vocal trading, clanging guitars and backed by the Medway Delta Review, which features, Bruce and Johnny of Thee Headcoats as well as Johnny Gibb of the Wildebeests. While simplicity, repetition and sheer rock & roll minimalism are at the heart of the album, In Blood never ceases hold interest. It's just plain addictive. LP $21 SKU:8564

COLD SUN PREORDER NOW!DBL LP PLUS 10” DARK SHADOWS - Label:WORLD IN SOUND We dont normally take orders for things we dont have in our warehouse, BUT we are expecting a rush on this one and want to be sure we arent caught short. You can order by itself or with your other stuff and we will let you know when it arrives and ship right away.
Cold Sun from Austin, Texas was recorded in 1970 in the legendary Sonobeat studios, where the Mariani and Johnny Winter first LPs were produced. The Cold Sun band are considered contemporaries of Velvet Underground and The Fugs, often listed as being in a similar vein but inspirations for this unique piece actually go back to the desperated, haunted Joe Meek. All songs lyrically express dark, mystic poetry with the true 60s psychedelic floating/distorted fuzz spirit presented in short compact mini-epics along with several mind blowing long tunes, such as "Ra-Ma" (11 min), "Here In The Year" (9 min) and "Fall" (7 min). Discovered by Rockadelic Records of Dallas, Texas in 1991, the Dark Shadows album saw the light of day the next year as a limited LP version, to become today one of the most important and revered US psychedelic underground albums from the early 70s. ---(Rockadelic heard it in the form of an old scratchy acetate that one of the Cold Sun band members had made in order to be able to play the recording at friendsparties on their turntables. The acetate only contained 2/3 of the songs but so greatly impressed them that Rockadelic managed together with bandleader Bill Miller to release the complete sessions from mastertape.)--- Autoharp wizard Miller eventually spearheaded Roky Erickson's international debut as the Cold Sun band joined forces with Roky in 1974 and became BliebAlien, later evolved into The Aliens and backed Roky on his famous albums and historical concerts.--- Carefully remastered from the mastertapes, this album will bring new rewarding listening experiences in expanded fidelity, plus 2 unreleased non-album songs, authentic Live/Concert recordings of "Live Again"(10 min) and "Mind Aura"(7 min). The fidelity of these reel to reel Live recordings is also remarkable. The CD and Vinyl issues will both have an extended booklet/insert with liner notes by Jello Biafra plus rare photos and other surprises. The Vinyl issue is packaged in a luxury foldout cardboard cover as Dragonwyck, Phantasia or Mystic Siva and contains an extra 10" bonus record & insert. According to Patrick (Lama) Lundborg from Lysergia.com: "Best Rockadelic LP ever, and in my opinion the best Texas LP of the time. Enjoy this ONE- HOUR psychedelic Happening, a "must-have" 60s/70s heavy uber-psych masterpiece!

CRYSTAL STILTS- ST ( garage pop ) Label:WOODSIST LP version. Compiles their s/t 12" and the Shattered Shine 7". 6 tracks. "The Crystal Stilts are moody-sounding f*ckers who make fabulous stripped-down garage-pop. Their mix-and-match post-punk ditties manage to sound both affected and effective at the same time; they're weirdly life-affirming and very fun... Self-limiting is the key to great garage-pop: By keeping it stripped-down on purpose-- whether you're the Saints ca. 1975 or Beat Happening ca. their whole career-- you unleash something greater than yourself. This is the Oulipian ideal, that one can free the subconscious by making oneself a drone to either the obvious or to seemingly haphazard rules. It's also partly why La Monte Young is punk as fuck-- but you know that already. Crystal Stilts do not sound like the Saints or Beat Happening or La Monte Young. These are weird pop songs you clap your hands along to. They pile a rockabilly riff and nursery school melodies onto a revved-up bass line and sweet surfy 60s organ riff on top of minimalist percussion on the song 'Crystal Stilts'." -- Pitchforkmedia.com LP $14 SKU:8744
