In
the tradition of 'beating The Man at his own game', a new label
was launched by Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre in conjunction with
Greg Shaw and Bomp
Records.
The purpose: to release BJM music not available through other
channels, and to record new bands which we will be producing
from time to time, while pursuing the goal of making the world
unsafe for rock and roll.
The Committee stands for everything the music industry doesn't:
the artists, the music, the revolution. |

FLOORIAN - WHAT THE BUZZING - CD
"Dreamy
guitars waft in the air, squealing, grinding, defining astral
chords with tasty ease... these stringed manipulations achieve
a transcendental disposition, building from a nebulous fog to
screeching outcries, further elaborated by lead guitars that
seek quite foreign sonic territories with their languid sustains
and bent notes... alternating between psychedelic stylings and
gothic darkness, conjuring melancholia that then strives to escape
the box with emotional exertions. There's a romantic edge in
this music, bestowing this spacerock with more than a touch of
humanity, making the tunes more accessible."

BRIAN
JONESTOWN MASSACRE - Give it Back! - CD
This
brilliant sixth album brings together all the elements you've
loved in their past work, from the drone-guitar intensity of
Methodrone to the country psychedelia of Mental Illness, with
a return to the spaced-out eastern madness of Satanic Majesties,
at the same time answering the musical question posed by Take
it From the Man. Includes a stunning version of their live tour-de-force
"Five Buck Sue." Another standout is "Not If You
Were the Last Dandy on Earth", a sendup of their good buddies
The Dandy Warhols. Released in 1997.

BRIAN
JONESTOWN MASSACRE - Thank God For Mental
Illness - CD
Is
mental health overrated? This album makes the case that extreme
psychosis is sometimes a symptom of the creative process, as
BJM does a high-wire act on the thin line between genius and
rubber walls. There is a strong country flavor to much of the
main portion of the album, with a couple of songs that bring
to mind the best work of Hank Williams, but there's also plenty
of the choice '60s-based rock the band has become known for.
In addition to all this, following the last song is a live recording
from "somewhere outside", followed by a pile of bonus
songs which include some of the group's best work ever. In all,
more than 64 minutes of soul-satisfying sounds from our favorite
basket-weavers. Released in 1996.

BRIAN
JONESTOWN MASSACRE - Take It From the Man - CD
Recorded
virtually live in the studio, Take It From the Man presents a
different facet of the group's style, a country-blues driven
groove with clear nods to the Stones, Beatles, Jesus & Mary
Chain and (some say) even the Stone Roses. It's a song-oriented
record, filled as before with lyrics that make you stop and think,
pushed forward by the band's dynamic new three-guitar lineup,
reminiscent in that respect of the Shake Some Action-vintage
Flamin' Groovies. But this is no oldie-fest; the derivative elements
are structural and spiritual; the music is thoroughly contemporary.
Take it from "the man": you don't have to "take
it" from the man when you have Take It From the Man. Released
in 1996.

BRIAN
JONESTOWN MASSACRE - Their Satanic Majesties'
Second Request - CD
"Satanic
Majesties" was probably the Stones' least commercial album,
filled with weird eastern drones, psychedelia-drenched chantings
about (inner & outer) space, and arcane instrumentals like
"Gomper". Most people quickly forget it, but not these
guys: they've put together a tribute that goes it one better,
bringing it up to date with the benefit of all the additional
weirdness that's been discovered in the past 28 years. Actually
more song-oriented than the Stones' effort, while at the same
time more trippy. For many of the group's fans, this is their
finest hour. Released in 1996.

BRIAN
JONESTOWN MASSACRE - Methodrone - CD
"Shoegazers
of the World Unite: You'll vibe hard on this SF band's fuzzbox-mad,
acoustic/electric guitar shimmer noise experience. Dark. You
can almost see the image of most blessed lead singer Anton, eyes
closed and hands raised in a drone chant rapture. Winks and nods
in the direction of My Bloody Valentine, Ride, the Stones, Spiritualized,
Velvet Underground...ad infinitum." - Underscope.
BAM Magazine said: "With this subconscious paean to dark
souls of the Doors and Joy Division, BJM swan-dive into all manner
of guitar-drone expression and narcotic-induced excursions to
our spiritual secret gardens. A stunningly beautiful and powerful
collection of psychedelic rock." This 4-1/2 star review
is typical of the raves BJM has received on their debut album.
Released in 1995.
