A PERSONAL NOTE FROM SUZY SHAW

The idea for this book came in the early '80s right after BOMP magazine first folded. It seemed a tragedy that the earliest works of so many great writers and artists would be lost to the ages, and we knew that somehow we needed to reproduce as much of the historic material as we could in book form. But assembling the material was an enormous task that would involve years of work, a team of artists and writers, and certainly a lot of money. And although Greg and I never gave up on the idea, we couldn't manage to find the time and make the connections to do it right.

When Greg died I knew it was the most important job I had, as this book is not just the story of BOMP and Greg Shaw, but a unique document of a time, place, and perspective in the history of rock and roll. This is a work beyond anything Greg and I could have dreamed of, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many talented people, and of course thanks to all of you, my customers, for making it all possible. I hope you enjoy the book. - Suzy Shaw

--- Bomp! is an incredible read because it brings out the passion that rock and roll can instill in, not only Greg Shaw but his ex-wife and long time business partner Suzy Shaw and writers like the legendary Lester Bangs and Greil Marcus. Featuring priceless original reproductions from the pages of both Mojo Navigator (which predated Rolling Stone by a year) to Who Put The Bomp and interspersed with essays from those who worked closely with Shaw, the enthusiasm contained in these pages is infectious. While some may bemoan the era covered by the majority of this book as rock's "Golden Age" I would have to beg to differ. In some ways, this age of blogs, podcasts and MySpace are breathing much needed fresh air into rock and roll and allowing widely dispersed groups of music fans the opportunity to share in, discover and converse about the music that turns their crank, much the way fanzines functioned in Greg's day. --- Consider It Saved. 'Bomp: Saving The World One Record At A Time' is much more than just the chronicle of a small, independent record label. It's also part cultural history, part sociological study, part "how to" (or "how not to") guide to running a record label, part scrapbook, part family album, and part rock journalism anthology. Between the pages of this marvelous book is nothing less than an alternate history of rock & roll as told by those who were helping to create and document it.

The book is a feast for the eyes with generous helpings of artwork, and memorabilia lovingly reproduced for your browsing pleasure. It also contains some of the best rock journalism of the past 40 years written by some of rock's best writers (Mick Farren, who co-authored the book with Bomp's Suzy Shaw, Greil Marcus, Lester Bangs, Lenny Kaye, Greg Shaw himself, and many, many more). There is both archival stuff - including the legendary lost and previously unpublished issue #22 of Greg Shaw's Bomp magazine - along with new essays which lend needed context to the entire project.

I've read stacks upon stacks of rock books throughout the years, not to mention countless piles of magazines, and periodicals as well, and I have never read a book about the music or the music business that I enjoyed more. We seem to be getting ever closer to a time when music will only exist as computer files. So it will be left to books, and blogs to chronicle the history of where the music came from, and what the culture that birthed it was like. 'Bomp: Saving The World One Record At A Time' tells that story better than any other I've read.

Should the day ever come when there are no records or CD's or cassettes, and maybe no rock 'n' roll (at least as it once was), if someone should ask you what it was all about and how it all came to pass, and how it sounded, even, hand them this book. You can hear the guitar riffs, and the organ runs, and the drumbeats, and the pounding bass notes with every turn of the page.

And I should add that as we are less than 2 weeks away from Christmas as I write this, it makes the perfect gift for anyone on your list who loves rock 'n' roll. And I mean REALLY loves it. - December 13, 2007 By The Recordchanger "Tim" (Kettering, Oh, USA)

--- First I'd just like to say how much I love the Bomp Book. Its hard to even describe how great it is. Hundreds of years from now this book will be the definitive story of rock! Thanks again. Adam Taylor.

--- What an amazing book! I've just begun flipping through the pages and I am extremely impressed with the manner in which you and Mick have designed the book. Superb! Fascinating articles, interviews and >archival photos. Way cool that you have included so many full color facsimile pages from 'Who Put the Bomp!' along with 'Mojo Navigator'. (I have come across stories about this latter, classic fanzine from the late '60s, however, this is the 1st occasion I have ever viewed actual reproductions...very sweet!) I am truly looking forward to kicking back once in a while to nestle down with 'Bomp! Saving The World One Record At A Time' and be entertained by the musical treasures found within the covers. Congratulations on the completion of this tremendous book! You and everyone involved in this project have brought much joy to fans who have always enjoyed the respectful and intelligent approach Greg Shaw displayed over the years when examining music from various genres. Have a wonderful Christmas and all the best in the New Year! Regards, John Sorensen

--- The book is beautiful - you should be really proud of it. I've found myself reading it between classes. It's a real historical document of pop music. It must have been a real trip down memory lane to put it together. Sean.

--- Dear Suzy... Congratulations... AWESOME Just.. awesome... Francisco Santelices.

--- Thanks so much for the book; it's really something. It looks so great and performs the challenging tasks of putting all of Greg's accomplishments down on the page-and they're considerable; it made me realize how much my association with him over the years influenced my own tastes and direction. You and Farren did a superb job. Have a Merry Xmas and a happy New Year. Best, Gene .

--- Thanks for the book which I received yesterday. I spent most of the evening poring over it. It's absolutely great. You and Mick both did a fantastic job, as did the designers. I was laughing out loud at some of your chapters, especially the tale of the hippie UFO cult. The book does an excellent job of humanizing Greg as well as lauding his greatness, and I think your contributions have a lot to do with that. Anyway, I still have a lot of reading ahead of me, but wanted to tell you how impressed I am. I'm really proud to be a part of this book! Best wishes, Mike.

--- Just wanted to add my congratulations on this - the book is an amazing wealth of information and old articles - great layout and photos, etc. After I started skimming it, I soon realized I would have to read it cover to cover! Nice extras, particularly the Last button that was very appreciated! All in all a terrific masterwork. Thanks! Mark Stanley (ongoing customer).

--- I received the book yesterday. It's wonderful and an obvious labor of love. I leafed through it for over an hour before I even got to the envelope with the shirt and CD. I first read your "pile" article and was immediately hooked. Great work on the book and a deep appreciation from all of us music nuts to you for taking on the project as well as all you've done for BOMP over the last 3 decades. Thanx, Kyle

--- By the way just glanced through the Bomp Book. It looks like a fantastic job, just what I hoped it would be. Congrats and thanks! Charlie Koenigsaecker

--- Just thought i'd let you know i received my book the other day! I haven't had a lot of time to look at it yet, but from what i did, it looks absolutely fabulous!! I love it! Thanks so much for all the hard work and effort you all put into this. Something i will certainly cherish in my collection. Thanks again!! Nate.
