4 LEVELS OF EXISTENCE - ST LTd edition 70’s psych - Label:LION The first ever official CD reissue of an album that many people consider to be the best Greek psychedelic album ever recorded, a belief that would mean that the Four Levels of Existence LP would supercede albums by artists like Axis, Aphrodite’s Child, Socrates, and George Romanos. We’ll let you decide the argument, for of one thing there is no doubt—that this is tremendous hard edged psychedelic/progressive material, originally released in a very small quantity by the private Venus label from 1976. As band leader Athanasios Alatas said: “Through Nick’s musical quest, Mario’s sensitivity, Christos’s madness, and my thoughts, we create many songs, all characterized by a psychedelic music sound, Greek lyrics, and monumental guitar solos.” This carefully documented reissue contains the entire Four Levels of Existence LP (its reissue debut), the only recordings they ever made. A twenty-four page booklet includes historical background on the Greek music scene of the early 1970’s, details of the band’s past written by Alatas, rare photos of the group, as well as lyrics to all the songs in both Greek and English. This CD edition is very strictly limited to 1,000 copies CD $19 SKU:4339

49TH PARALLEL- ST (60’s psych) - Label:LION First proper version of this legendary Canadian psych album, supplemented by eleven bonus tracks, two of which have never seen reissue before now.The group's first two singles, ‘Laborer’/’You Do Things’ (1967), and ‘She Says’ b/w ‘Citizen Freak’ (1968), are prime pieces of pouting Prairie punk. In the spring of 1969, the 49th Parallel had a hit in Canada and the USA with ‘Twilight Woman’, a lovely song that sounded like a poppier, slightly folkier version of what bands like Tomorrow were doing in England. The success of the singles resulted in the release of the 49th Parallel’s only album, on MGM affiliate Maverick Records. All hyperbole aside, this is easily one of the top Canadian rock albums ever released. The album contains excellent material, including the pulsating psychedelia of ‘Lazerander Filchy’ and the ultra-strange ‘(The) Magician’, as well as the quintessential punk edginess of ‘Now That I'm a Man’ and ‘(Come On Little Child &) Talk To Me’. Dan Lowe's blazing fuzz guitar work stands out, particularly on ‘Missouri’, and when challenged by organist Jack Velker's brilliant stuttering work on ‘Eye To Eye’, ‘Talk To Me’ and ‘(The) People’. Strong melodies, great playing and sympathetic production, make for a must own collection of songs. The twelve page booklet includes two slightly different views of the band’s history, as well as the notes from the original LP release. CD $18 SKU:4338

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O- Acid Motherly Love (psych) -Label:REPOSE "Returning to their Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO moniker, Kawabata Makoto and his fellow psych jam explorers have let loose one of their most varied, extensive discs to date. Acid Motherly Love is a prog rock banquet, which maintains its fuzzy psych credentials without losing a sense of narrative. Take the twenty-one minute three-parter 'Douchebag': it all starts off as a tranquil spoken word piece set against a backdrop of organ and acoustic guitar, only to switch to full-blown hard rocking sonic blitzkrieg, eventually winding down into a lengthy passage of feedback and oscillator tones. It's like the Grateful Dead tackling Rush's 'A Farewell To Kings.' Probably. After all that, there's a bit of a comedown in the shape of 'Traitors With Beautiful Hearts', a sprawling four minutes of disconnected sound elements, and palate-cleansing loopiness that piles into 'Astro Elvis ESP', an all-out fuzz fest and ring modulator workout. Weirdest of all is set closer 'Johnny Johnny Jerusalem', a nutty a cappella piece featuring the kind of sound poem silliness you might hear from a jetlagged Jaap Blonk." --Boomkat CD $21 SKU:8665

AGINCOURT- Fly Away (70’s psych/folk) - Label:LION URUGUAYAN SERIESfirst official issue of this much-loved album of Moody Blues-influenced home recordings from around 1970, from the fertile minds of psychedelic-folk masters Peter Howell and John Ferdinando, but credited to their semi-fictitious group Agincourt; an intricate, dreamy psychedelic album, made all the better by the fragile female vocals on offer from Lee Menelaus; considered a bit more progressive (read: less acoustic, less fluid) than the duo’s other albums, with reasonable comparisons often made to the music of Syd Barret or Fairfield Parlour. We at Lion Productions are pleased to have had a hand at making this music available for the first time from the original master tapes! The sixteen-page booklet comes with lyrics and band history, and includes previously unseen photos of the band. The addition of two previously unheard bonus tracks makes this an essential reissue of a private pressing mega-rarity (originals are £1500 or more)! CD $18 SKU:5893

AMIGOS DE MARIA- Rock (’68 garage psych) - Label:Underground Masters As the title says, this album really ROCKS!!! Absolutely incredible Chilean group who recorded this amazing album in 1968, though it wasn’t released until 1973. The finest and purest garagey psychedelia you could have ever imagined, this record has it all. Opening 10 min track “Vuelve a comenzar” has wild, pounding drums, great aggressive guitar riffs plus weird and demented vocals. What a killer track!!! Rest of the album follows this track quite closer, including unbelieveable cover versions of Box Top’s “The letter” or Ray Charles’ “What I’d say” which are so wild that you’ll hardly recognise them. We’re not talking about lo-fi mid-60s garage sound, this is top-level, perfectly produced garagey psychedelia!!! Definitely one of the best South American albums from the psych era. Two tracks sung in Spanish, rest in English. First time on CD. FRENCH GW PICK IMPORT CD $20 SKU:4723

ANT TRIP CEREMONY- 24 HOURS (68 psych) -Label:CICADELIC While the legendary status of Ant Trip Ceremony has caused it to be bootlegged numerous times this is the first time it is being re-released legitimately. With photos and the story of the group as related by its members. The Ant Trip Ceremony album was recorded during two sessions. the first session was in February of 1968 in a rented hall at Oberlin. Steve was there for the first sessions but had left Oberlin by the spring of 1968 and was not present for the second recording session. The album was called "Twenty Four Hours"because that was the feeling behind the sessions. The band felt ready to record their original songs. These were performed live before student audiences. During live shows, the band was wild, but sadly no live tapes exist. Thus the original songs done on the album when performed live were more psychedelic and improvised. The band was known for getting into strange and long jams. Furthermore no song was ever done twice exactly the same. They were, in some ways like the Grateful Dead of the region. When the band played it was a happening, a genuine psychedelic event. Shows went on for hours, with the audience in a wide variety of states of consciousness. The artwork for the album was of its time with psychedelic-mind-zapping art work. It was without a doubt a counterculture statement!! Musically the whole album has a strong west-coast feel and influenced of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver but also Hendrix are felt troughout the album. A classic psychedelic album. CD $16 SKU:8173

BRIMSTONE- Paper Winged Dreams (70’s psych prog) -Label:CAMELLIA MUSIC (USA) band-produced master-tape reissue of incredibly rare melodic US psychedelic progressive private-press album (1973); features extended instrumental organ/guitar passages, or as is said elsewhere “long instrumental tracks with keyboard and guitar mixing psych with progressive styles in a fragile ethereal manner”; side two is a complex suite in five movements which features some nice solo vocals complimented by intermingled harmonies; lyrics dominate the music but there's some nice guitar work and counter-pointing vocals; overall well worth investigation. Acid Archives describes it thus: “Rather irresistible melodic prog-artrock LP with a light, airy feel throughout. The band belongs at the dreamy Moody Blues and Camel end of the prog spectrum, with flawless vocal harmonies, long classical-inspired keyboard excursions and plenty of non-aggressive guitar interplay.” CD $16 SKU:6925

COLD SUN - Dark Shadows (60’s psych) - Label:WORLD IN SOUND Cold Sun from Austin, Texas was recorded in 1970 in the legendary Sonobeat studios, where the Mariani and Johnny Winter first LPs were produced. The Cold Sun band are considered contemporaries of Velvet Underground and The Fugs, often listed as being in a similar vein but inspirations for this unique piece actually go back to the desperated, haunted Joe Meek. All songs lyrically express dark, mystic poetry with the true 60s psychedelic floating/distorted fuzz spirit presented in short compact mini-epics along with several mind blowing long tunes, such as "Ra-Ma" (11 min), "Here In The Year" (9 min) and "Fall" (7 min). Discovered by Rockadelic Records of Dallas, Texas in 1991, the Dark Shadows album saw the light of day the next year as a limited LP version, to become today one of the most important and revered US psychedelic underground albums from the early 70s. ---(Rockadelic heard it in the form of an old scratchy acetate that one of the Cold Sun band members had made in order to be able to play the recording at friendsparties on their turntables. The acetate only contained 2/3 of the songs but so greatly impressed them that Rockadelic managed together with bandleader Bill Miller to release the complete sessions from mastertape.)--- Autoharp wizard Miller eventually spearheaded Roky Erickson's international debut as the Cold Sun band joined forces with Roky in 1974 and became BliebAlien, later evolved into The Aliens and backed Roky on his famous albums and historical concerts.--- Carefully remastered from the mastertapes, this album will bring new rewarding listening experiences in expanded fidelity, plus 2 unreleased non-album songs, authentic Live/Concert recordings of "Live Again"(10 min) and "Mind Aura"(7 min). The fidelity of these reel to reel Live recordings is also remarkable. The CD and Vinyl issues will both have an extended booklet/insert with liner notes by Jello Biafra plus rare photos and other surprises. The Vinyl issue is packaged in a luxury foldout cardboard cover as Dragonwyck, Phantasia or Mystic Siva and contains an extra 10" bonus record & insert. According to Patrick (Lama) Lundborg from Lysergia.com: "Best Rockadelic LP ever, and in my opinion the best Texas LP of the time. Enjoy this ONE- HOUR psychedelic Happening, a "must-have" 60s/70s heavy uber-psych masterpiece! “ CD $25 SKU:8505

EDWARDS HAND- ST (UK 60’s psych pop) - Label:LIGHTNING TREE Rod Edwards and Roger Hand formed this breezy, psychedelic pop outfit after briefly recording as The Picadilly Line. Sadly this album never made it to a British release as their record label folded which subsequently took their EMI deal and UK distributor contract away at precisely the wrong time. This is therefore a genuine lost UK '60's gem that received glowing reviews upon its release in the US. It makes its debut here on CD. Recorded on four track tape at EMI St. Johns Wood in late '68, with Geoff Emerick and George Martin during a break in the sporadic White Album sessions, you can hear the benefits from Martin and Emerick's vast experience, technical skills and orchestral arrangements. There is plenty of swinging London vibes and whimsical vocals here, as well as dreamy vocal harmonies and elaborate electric and acoustic arrangements very much of the era. The Beatles connection is obviously strong, and much of this material is reminiscent of late '60, early '70's Paul McCartney as well as Donovan - with it's chirpy, evocative lyrics, harmonies and warm arrangements - but there is also a late Small Faces / Kinks vibe in their lyrical descriptions of old London Town. Other late 60's comparisons would certainly include Kaleidoscope (UK) and the early orchestrated material by The Strawbs. Reissued with full consent of the producer and band. CD $25 SKU:6317

F/I- SPACE MANTRA(space/psych-rock)-Label:LEXICON DEVIL Harsh electronic noise and industrial sounscapes, taking cues from the likes of Blue Cheer, Hawkwind and 70s krautrock. CD $16 SKU:8229

FREEDOM'S CHILDREN-3 CD box Astra/Battle Hymn of the Broken-Hearted Horde/Galactic Vibes (60’s/70s psych)Label:SHADOKS Hymn of the Broken-Hearted Horde/Galactic Vibes 3CD BOX (SHAD 104BOX). Deluxe 3CD box set edition of these albums, previously issued on vinyl by Shadoks. These 3 CDs will also be available separately, but this version puts these together in a heavy cardboard box, like the Blops CD on Shadoks. This box set edition is limited to 300 copies. Shadoks Music presents all three records by Freedom's Children, now collected together, after two years of struggle and hard work with tons of help from collectors in South Africa, England, Austria and the U.S.A. Since all mastertapes were lost in a big fire, they had to be mastered from the original vinyl, using two or three mint copies of each album to make the best possible sounding product. All three albums are the most wanted albums ever from South Africa. Some call them "The Pink Floyd of South Africa," and if the political situation in S.A. at that time would have been easier, they would have had the same status in the international music market as Pink Floyd. Beautifully composed songs, amazing instrumentation, well-crafted guitar work and great singers. The extra-heavy prog sound beats most albums in the same direction coming from the UK or U.S.A. Three absolute masterpieces. CD $58 SKU:8623

GREER-Between Two Worlds (70’s UK psych rock)-Label: EREBUS "Obscure artefact out of a local scene that produced cult music for a 15-year period; this is a powerful trip in a song-oriented 1970s British rock/hardrock style, with psych moves on the two long epics. Plenty of raw guitar, some piano and synth, heartfelt vocals, all wrapped in a consistent package that displays talent and self-confidence. May be too much of a 70s mainstream sound for some, and indeed it would have deserved to come out on a major label. Should appeal to fans of Felt on Nasco." >From the Acid Archives. CD $25 SKU:8351

KORAY, ERKIN - S/T (70’s psych) -Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) first proper reissue of Koray’s first album, an absolutely over the top debut album by the Turkish psychedelic guitar guru, which is not only the rarest of all of his albums, but also the rarest Turkish psychedelic album of them all; the record was released in 1973, but is actually culled from Koray’s singles from the previous five years. This wide range of dates (1968-73) encompasses a pretty potent period in music, and makes for great variety; some tracks have a kind of pre-psychedelic vibe, while others have the swirling hashish heaviness of that most elusive thing, a sound that one might deem “pure psychedelia”; in any case, every track has that unique Eastern feel that Koray brings to all his recordings. The end result is definitely on a par of greatness with “Elektronik Turkuler”, which makes this a must have album for any psychedelic head! And as if that wasn’t enough, there are eight incredible bonus cuts from the same period as the album tracks, only ever released as singles, that include some of the most blistering material Koray ever recorded. Wow! Liner notes have plentiful information on Erkin Koray’s early career, as well as lyrics for some songs... alas, only in Turkish. WPC6-8494 CD $19 SKU:6276

LATE, THE - SONGS FROM THE FAMILY TREE (67 psych pop )-Label:WOODEN HILL Although harmony-based British soft rock act Unicorn didnt release their superb debut album, Uphill All The Way, until mid-1971, the core of the band had been playing together, principally as the Late, for several years. Taken from previously unreleased acetates and studio tapes, Songs From The Family Tree charts the groups hitherto-undocumented progress from 1967 to 1969 as they slowly evolved from their original, Hollies-inspired psychedelic pop direction to create a more individual identity. With comprehensive liner notes, quotes and numerous photographs, Songs From The Family Tree is an essential item for Unicorn fans and admirers of late Sixties British pop alike CD $24 SKU:8512

MCKINLEY, WILSON: - Spirit of Elijah (Xian psych)- Label:EREBUS Their really good one, west coasty Christian rock reminiscent of the best tracks on the Rainbow Promise LP and solid all through. Well-written songs combine perfectly with the jammy SF ballroom sound popular among the Jesus Music bands, recalling the mellow aspects of Moby Grape in particular. The epic, spine-chilling title track is especially good. A loose, understated live in the basement recording adds to the appeal. This album is undoubtedly one of the classics from the era." - Acid Archives. As with all Erebus Records titles this was remastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. It is presented here for the first time on CD CD $21 SKU:8627

MOPS - Psychedelic Sounds + Bonus - Label:World Psychedelia NEW LO PRICE THE MOPS are one of Japan's best known 'Group Sound' (GS) bands, particularly noted for their psychedelic period. The group was founded in 1966 by high school friends MIKIHARU SUZUKI (drums), TARO MIYUKI (guitar), MASARU HOSHI (lead guitar) and KAORU MURAKAMI (bass), playing mostly instrumental rock like that of the fabulously popular Ventures. The Mops’ album Psychedelic Sounds in Japan, released in April of 1968, was full of flower power flourishes, including cosmic artwork, ethnic clothing, fuzz guitars and sitar playing. It included covers of the Airplane's hits 'Somebody To Love' and 'White Rabbit,' The Doors' 'Light My Fire,' Eric Burdon's 'San Franciscan Nights' and The Animals' 'Inside Looking Out,' as well as the super Mops’ theme song 'I Am Just A Mops' (which later became a cult favorite after being included on the obscurities album Nuggets 2). Despite being widely considered a psychedelic band, the Mops' original songs were more garage band sounding. They also had a dark side that was very much not a hippie vibe. While most bands were playing love songs, The Mops’ album had a song called 'Blind Bird' about a terrible dark world, which contained the lyrics 'please kill me,' This led to the song being left off some reissues (but it is included on this one.).”IMPORT CD $15 SKU:5833

NIGHTSHADOWS - Vol 3 The Psychedelic Years 1967-1969 - Label:HATTRAX Psychedelic Rock with Soul influence CD that includes many tracks off the group's 1968 collector LP that sells for $1500 in mint condition. The long awaited collector CD of The Night Shadows' psychedelic period has finally been released. Volume 3 features many of the selections found on The Square Root of Two LP, their 1968 acid-rock classic that recently sold at auction for $1500 in mint condition. Production effort on this release actually began in 1986 as a two-disc vinyl album project but took 15 years to complete as a three-volume trilogy on compact disc. The crash of a light airplane in 1987 destroyed most of the original artwork, photographs, and negatives that were being air freighted to an album production facility. Finding quality copies of photos, the changeover to compact discs, and many other legal, financial, personal and technical issues delayed this volume until now. Luckily, some great, unreleased psychedelic tracks were discovered during this long delay and are included on this CD.

POLIFEMO- ST (70’s psych/prog) - Label:VOID/HALLUCINATIONS RECORDS (USA) RARE debut album by this Argentine rock super-group, led by David Lebon (ex-Color Humano and Pescado Rabioso) on guitar and vocals, Rinaldo Rafanelli (ex-Color Humano and Sui Generis) on bass, Juan Rodríguez (ex-Los Mentales and Sui Generis) on drums, and keyboard player Ciro Fogliatta (ex-Los Gatos, Sacramento and Espíritu; a blend of rock with some slight psychedelic and progressive touches, especially the use of mellotron and moogs; the main thrust of the album is hard and heavy blues-based rock—more than a casual nod to Uriah Heep and other UK hard rock bands; includes both of their rare EMI singles+ b-sides as bonus tracks. CD $18 SKU:1286

PUSEY, JOSEPH- IN MY LADY'S CHAMBER (60’S PSYCH/FOLK -Label:MANTRAX High level psyche-folk from 1977, Californian private release but with a sound that has more to do with UK stuff, with some Eastern influenced parts as well. Pusey, ex-Yellow Autumn, is certainly a very impressive guitar player, his playing in this album is simply incredible and especially the instrumental parts of the album will knock you out. Theres only acoustic guitars, bells, gong, flute and slight percussions..but you wont need anything else. A brilliant record this is, sure to impress any psychedelic folk fan. CD $27 SKU:8378

RALLIZES DENUDES, LES ( Hadaka No Rallizes ) - (Yodo A Go Go (modern psych ) - Label:10th Ave. Freeze Out Seemingly endless sonic flame-throwers of phased white noise streak across your inner landscape, as stupidly loud and overly-backlit lead guitar emissions perpetrated by a perpetually be-shaded longhair pummel the similarly be-shaded but barely adequate musical backing that sags and creaks under the wattage. Occasionally, lead vocals of a singular variety are provided by said be-shaded mad axeman, whose paranoid personality ensures all songs are delivered in a voice of querulous subterranean gargling from beyond the valley of Alan Vega· My giddy aunt, whatâs this, then, a Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy from the Underworld? A rough guide to Japrockâs most intuitive non-career movers? Has the worldâs most revolutionary rockânâroll band released a compilation album of leader Mizutaniâs most frequently requested tracks due to overwhelming popular demand? Ja, mein hairies, this certainly seems to be the case. For, with the arrival of this superb Flightless Bird compilation, obsessive fans of Les Rallizes Denudés (are there any other kinds?) finally have a proper Îearly careerâ overview of Mizutani & Co. at their fingertips, a 70-minute-long super distillation of this most contrary of bandâs choicest musical moves executed between 1967-82, a superb sounding and partly/mostly chronological trawl through the freaked out and perpetually-yelping mindscape of singer and avant-avalanche guitarmonger Mizutani, and his sinister-yet-interchangeable pool of black clad world-to-rights acolytes." SIMMONS,JEFF - dbl CD (THE STRAIGHT YEARS) NAKED ANGELS SOUNDTRACK & LUCILLE HAS MESSED MY MIND UP- (60’s folk / blues /psych) Label:WORLD IN SOUND This 2CD set presents the Straight label years of Zappa´s multi-talented "sideman", Jeff Simmons. In 1968 in Seattle Frank Zappa and Herb Cohen was in the audience after his sound check, and was listening to "Easy Chair", Jeff´s group (soon to be released on WIS). Fascinated by his talent, he was signed for Straight records. Both albums, "Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up" and "Naked Angels" were recorded in 1969.
CD #1 The Lucille album was produced by by Chris Huston (Led Zeppelin II, Undertakers, Young Rascals) and Frank Zappa under the synonym "La Marr Bruister", who wrote the title track, played lead guitar on two tracks and co-wrote "Wonderful Wino". Lucille contains 10 catchy and heavy Blues-Rock and Folk, Jeff is "playing a hard-driven and groovy bass, piano, organ and accordion and singing in a style similar to that of Jack Bruce with Cream. Simmons presented a brace of strong, harmonically sophisticated songs that have some of the explosive, multi-hued impact of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. (Ben Watson, excerpted from Frank Zappa: "The Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play")... "No one knows it... not even him... but someday that kid's gonna be a great R&B singer" (Frank Zappa). Jeff was in the Mothers of Invention at the time of 200 Motels, Jeff also played rhythm guitar on Waka/Jawaka and clown about with Frank and George Duke on Roxy & Elsewhere.
CD #2 Naked Angels, a soundtrack for a biker movie is a sequence of mostly instrumentals that combine melody and fuzz guitar; heavy, psychedelicate surf-rock. This 2 CD-set presents in a 20p. booklet with all original artwork, lots of memorabilia from Jeff´s vaults (posters, cool photos, linernotes). The music was carefully re-mastered to sound today as fresh as it was 40 years ago, plus 2 bonustracks. Lucille was rated in Mojo Magazine as the 2nd best release on Straight Records. Strange Things Art Magazine mentions it as "the closest in execution to contemporary Mothers", but Jeff´s individual talent made this album to an all time masterpiece. Never has a musician in psychedelic Rock´n´Roll captured the essence of deep emotion and soul like the "sideman"! CD $29 SKU:6319

STONE HARBOUR- Emerges ‘74 basement psych) - Label:LION “Extraordinary basement psych with two multi-instrumentalists creating a melancholic dreamlike state with songs fading in and out of the speakers, cavemen drums, primitive electronics and murky fuzz lurking in the background. The best tracks go into places no other albums reach. Actually closer to the heart of psychedelia than most other records listed here.” —Acid Archives of Underground Sounds

“What's a boy to do? It's 1974, you're young and have a head full of Hawkwind and Roky and the Elevators, and old brutalist blues in the Hound Dog Taylor/Fred McDowell backwoods whisky-fucked mode; you're stuck in Hicksville, USA; the music scene sucks: glam's dead or dying slowly; punk is a good year or so from even starting to get itself born. Town's too damn small to even muster up a band. It's just and your buddy and that's it, man. So you grow your hair and wear satin, wander wide-eyed and tripping across small-town railway tracks and hang loose at the weekend in your basement. You gather a bunch of cheapo instruments on the never-never and you start cutting low-fi bedroom demos. Stone Harbour were Ric Ballas and Dave McCarty, and out of nowhere and nothing, at entirely the wrong time, they cut an LP that will blow your head clean off. This is a trip into the true dark heart of psychedelia! The music? ‘You'll Be a Star’ shimmers and aches in the midnight; cymbals wash over you, Dave McCarty's vocals emerge from some subterranean cave, as the keyboards flicker, flicker, flash across the periphery of the song; ‘Rock & Roll Puzzle’ is dark, twisted fried garage punk blues brutality, pre-empting The Gories and Pussy Galore by a good ten years! Songs fade in and out; finger-picking blurs into screaming squelching synths; guitars melt in the mid-summer heat. ‘Grains of Sand’ frazzles like The Stooges through a fucked-up amp and filtered through a transistor radio with the valves burning out, whilst ‘Summer Magic is Gone’ is the most haunted, haunting song in many a long strange moon. Shimmers like stars in the 2 am fog and haze, and bleeds lost and lonely and bruised into the heat-warped dawn. You're still awake, although the brain doesn't work like it used to. Blurred and bleary and exhilarated and stoned to the very core of your soul.” Booklet includes lyrics and notes; disc has a handful of previously unreleased tracks from 1975 sessions as bonus tracks. VON, RONNIE -A Máquina Voadora (70s psych)-Label:DISCOS MARIPOSA “The last and probably best album from Vons incredible psychedelic trilogy from the years 1969-1970. We said some time ago that of the three key albums from this long-time Brazilian pop-star, that the first was the best, but hearing this again suggests that its time to revise that opinion. It1s true that all three albums make it clear that the psychedelic effects of Tropicalia were not confined to Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Gal Costa. Yes, Von often takes a poppier angle in getting to a similar fuzz-guitar driven musical landscape, but not only does he get there all the same, on this album the pop is minimal, and the fuzz supreme. Its difficult to describe how balanced this album is, as it features truly one-of-a-kind songs, which include any number of effects and treatments of Ronnie1s enchanting voice, all of which matches perfectly with the mysterious and melancholic songs on the album. Listen to it and let yourself fly into the far reaches of Ronnie Vons dreamy, twisted mind. Comes with a fulsome 20-page booklet that includes a history of Vons career (sort of), as well as lyrics” CD $19 SKU:8629

VON, RONNIE - A Misteriosa Luta (70s psych) -Label:DISCOS MARIPOSA .. do Reino de Parassempre Contra- 3Second part of the amazing psychedelic trilogy by Brazilian star Ronnie Von, recorded between 1969-1970. There1s little doubt that the three albums which comprise Von1s brief psychedelic legacy are not only a memorable break from his multitude of pop outings, but more importantly, stand as three of the more compelling psychedelic recordings to emerge from any single artist of the era. This record is a collection of 12 psychedelic pop songs, with unique arrangements, featuring violins, reverse guitars, brass, piano and various psychedelic effects. Even more innovative than the previous album (already reissued by Discos Mariposa) and nothing like what you might have expected from someone who is more pop star and psychedelic guru. Some songs are entrancing epics, some Tropicalia, and others just pop/psych masterpieces. Includes the entire album, plus 4 bonus tracks. CD $19 SKU:8660

WIZARDS FROM KANSAS - ST -(70’S PSYCH) Label:World Psychedelia A very welcome reissue of this excellent and unheralded album (Mercury, 1970) that has developed a big reputation and price tag over the past decade--and why not, as it's one of the best US psych albums around, with fine versions of classic songs like "High Flying Bird" and Buffy St. Marie's "Codeine," as well as excellent original compositions like "Misty Mountainside," "Country Dawn," and "She Rides With Witches." Includes keyboard help from MARK NAFTALIN from PAUL BUTTERFIELD's BLUES BAND (who remembers the record fondly), as well as additional aid from a cast of hemp pickers, superdooperchicks, and other friends. CD $20 SKU:5834

WIZARDS FROM KANSAS - ST CARD WALLET (70’s psych) - Label: PHOENIX IMPORT Actually hailing from Kansas, the Wizard's were an obscure country-influenced outfit whose debut album featured some fine versions of classics from the period, including Buffy St.Maries Codine, as well as some excellent originals such as Misty Mountainside, Country Dawn and She Rides With Witches . The original five-piece band enjoyed considerable local suceess, eventually finding themselves playing the Fillomre East, a gig which lead to a number of offers of record deals which the group turned down. However, towards the end of 1969 Mercury Records finally wore them down, and the band signed for the label, with their eponymous first (and only album) appearing in the summer of 1970. During the albums recording, several of the band members decided they preferred playing jazz and duly departed to persue their interests, leaving Mercury with a new album but no band to promote it. Predictably, the label lost interest and the record sunk without trace. There is a lot of fine stuff on this album, which is both extremely collectable and highly recommended CD $16 SKU:8524

YANAGIDA, HIRO- Hirocosmos mini-LP style gatefold slv (70’s psych) -Label:SHOWBOAT/SKY STATION Top quality eye-popping reissue housed in hard cover mini-LP style gatefold sleeve complete with obi and liners of this rare 3rd album by psychedelic maverick Hiro Yanagida. Another totally vanished and ear bleedingly rare gem out of Japan's psychedelic history, this was Hiro Yanagida's (ex Apryl Fool, Food Brain, Sato Masahiko & Soundbreakers, Floral, etc) second solo album released in 1973. Original copies hardly ever surface anymore so this reissue is more than a welcome feast. The music is also just stellar and can be best described and as a mixture between Miles Davis electric mid-'70s electric period (minus the horns) cross-breeding with fusion and psychedelic elements, some snippets of unbridled improvisational jams and extended spun out instrumental tracks. Swirling key changes, synth driven organic whirlpools of exotic bliss, rigid time changes, swift communicative interplay that touches on freak-out jams as well as on sweet oozing interludes. A real sonic gem, and probably the best disc ever made to accompany your autumnal feelings of fleeting summer lust and last upsurge of vitality before winter settles in. One of the key recordings out of Japan 's psychedelic and progressive rock history and much in demand. CD $31 SKU:8161

HE AND SHE - 22 Far-Out Pop-Psych Duos from the Late '60s. "Label:PET It pretty much began with Sonny and Cher. When the teener template of Paul and Paula and Dick and Deedee got superimposed on the hip set, a new genre was born. The success of co-ed pairings like Mimi and Richard and Nino and April had coffee house folkies shacking up in droves and soon every town had its own dynamic duo. There were variations too. Paul and Mary found their Peter. John Phillips had two chicks so he had to find another Papa. But the sound was what made it, the call and response, the traded verses -- love stories acted out over twelve-strings ringin', like shaggy-topped Romeos and Juliets in tight slacks and pilgrim belts. You've heard some of the reissues -- the Blackburns and Snows, the Jims and Jeans -- their stories and music made public again after years in obscurity. Now hear the ones who didn't quite crack the radio charts, at least not for long. The ones whose songs remain unsung. Heroes and heroines in the nightclubs and studio booths. Reaching out in the darkness, and the sunshine too. In love and touching forever. She and He. He and She." LOVE PEACE AND POETRY- Chilean Psychedelic Music -Label:QDK GERMANY This exciting new part in the excellent ŒLove Peace & Poetry1 series features recordings from the late 60s and early 70s psych scene of Chili. Since rock music was regarded a subversive art during the days of dictatorship, many mastertapes from the era were destroyed in witch hunt-like actions. Which makes these surviving recordings extra worth while. The bands represented include Embrujo, Kissing Spell, Los Blops, Los Jaivas, Sacros, Los Beat 4, Tumulto a.m.m. COMPCD $22 SKU:7909

LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- African Psychedelic Music - Label:QDK GERMANY This is volume eight of the Love, Peace & Poetry series. Many records on this compilation are from South Africa, but it also covers countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. As in the other six volumes of this series the tracks are only taken from rare LP's and some fetches prices over $1500 for an original. The biggest problem with original records from African countries are finding them in good condition. The turntables where very very poor and the hot and humid climate does not preserve records very good. Sometimes termites eaten away complete record covers. In addition earthquakes, sandstorms, floods, wars, revolutions and other heavy influences made it hard to release albums and keep them in good shape since the late 60's. All this makes this compilation very special beside the amazing good music. The Bands: Abstract Truth / A-Cads / Flames / Freedoms Children / McCully Workshop / Third Eye / Those Five / Suck / Otis Waygood Ten Light Claps / Wildebeest / Mack Sigis Porter / Blo / Ofege / Quentin E Klopjaeger / Rikki Ililonga / Chrissy Zebby Tembo & Ngozi Family. LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- Japanese Psych Music- Label:QDK GERMANY Fourth volume in this phenomenal series of compilations focusing on the weirdest and most uncommon records from the late 60s/early 70s. After volumes of American (QDK 021), Latin American (QDK 022) and Asian (QDK 029) obscurities, here comes Japan. "Right up front I think it's only right to note that anyone allergic to heavily distorted blues-based psychedelic lead guitar may very well not survive this disc. Japanese psychedelic music of the 1960s & 1970s is very heavily invested in a hard rock aesthetic and much of what we've chosen to include here features some phenomenal over the top electric guitar excess. Many Japanese records from this period are either very heavy psychedelic rock, or they are very experimental and avant garde with little in the way of classic UK & US Sixties 'underground' psychedelia to be found. As a result, while Japan and the United Kingdom released a comparable number of records during this period, there are a great many rare and expensive Japanese records that remain virtually unknown on this side of the globe. A few of the top rarities are only now finding their way to these shores. The LP by Ceremony creates a musical trip based upon a Buddhist mass, employing exotic instruments and building to a guitar assault but is impossible to really excerpt a small piece of for our purposes here. Only two or three Japanese collectors own the $4,000 original album. My American and European friends who have visited Japan almost unanimously describe the experience as what they imagine visiting another planet might be like. A very friendly and inviting planet, but disorientingly different in many ways. I think what they are describing is really the experience of a first encounter with a non-Western culture and imagine the experience of a Japanese traveler's first encounter with, for example, Arizona or New Mexico, would resemble an even greater interplanetary experience. Unlike most compilations which focus on rare singles tracks, the Love, Peace & Poetry series collects tracks from the world's rarest and most obscure psychedelic albums believing that, no matter how passionate a music fan you might be, you shouldn't be too surprised to find that you may have missed at least a few things along the way. Our intent is to make the claim that the world is a bigger place than you first thought, and to provide some convincing evidence to back that up. So here's a little Love, a little Peace, and a little Poetry to get you by until next time." -- Stan Denski. LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- VA Mexican Psychedelic Music (60’s, 70’s) - Label:QDK GERMANY The most recent volume of the Love, Peace & Poetry series, Mexican Psychedelic Music, takes as its focus what was one aspect of our second collection in this series, Latin American Psychedelic Music. While there are some parallels between the evolution of rock and roll in the US and Mexico, the stories are out of synch with each other in interesting ways. In the US, the first wave of rock and roll presented a challenge to longstanding racial divisions and repressed sexuality that was fought off (by 1960 Elvis was in the Army, Jerry Lee Lewis in exile, Chuck Berry in prison and Little Richard turned to Jesus) and replaced by the mostly bland and neutered pop of singers like Fabian, Dion, Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon and Pat Boone (if you've ever wonder what music might sound like in Hell listen to Pat Boone's covers of Little Richard; possibly the most frightening music ever made). The history of Mexican pop music remains calm and fairly controversy free through the 1950s and into the late 1960s. The economic prosperity that fueled the Baby Boom generation in the United States didn't exist for Mexican youth, nor was Mexico as racially volatile or sexually repressed. In the 1950's the culture of the United States was far more shook up by Elvis and his gyrating army than was Mexico. Rock and roll became dangerous in Mexico when it began to be mixed with a challenge to the political status quo. Tracks from rare LPs by The Flying Karpets, Grupo Ciruela, Los Ovnis, La Onda De Survival, and Nahuatl help complete our tour through the various climates of 1960s-1970s Mexican psychedelia, and readily demonstrate the origins of a musical culture that continues on into contemporary times in the many bands that make up the active Mexican music scene here in the new century COMPCD $19 SKU:8613

REALISTIC PATTERNS- Orchestrated Psychedelia from the USA - Label:PSYCHIC CIRCLE (UK) This compilation rounds up 20 (previously uncomped on CD) tracks, all of which have been enriched, rather than diluted, by orchestration. There has long been a prevailing school of thought that psychedelic bands and orchestras do not mix. Even the compiler, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond), admits he has been guilty in the past of dismissing many a fine track because of the unwelcome intrusion of brass and strings. It was down to bands like The Left Banke, with their innovative use of baroque instrumentation and chord structure, to show that psychedelia could be orchestrated and still sound superb. You'll hear fuzz guitars, flutes, organs, sitars, horns, strings and some strange, strange lyrics. Okay, we concede that the mental image of a mob of penguin-suited, straight-laced classical musicians sawing away over a tripped-out psych backbeat may not appear particularly "rock & roll" (well actually, maybe it does!), but open your ears and your mind, and you cannot fail to be seduced. In among these mellifluous sounds you'll find a future Allman Brother, Texan garage band The Kitchen Cinq operating under a pseudonym, a band of loggers and firemen from the Pacific Northwest who nabbed a brief one-album deal, a former member of Paul Revere & The Raiders, and the man who would become Bruce Springsteen's manager. Step right this way. Artists include: Burned, The Subterranean Monastery, The Moon, Bubble, Compass, Tim Wilde, The Sound Solution, The Mystic Astrologic Crystal Band, The Byzantine Empire, A Handful, Douglas Fir, Gregg Shively, Nobody's Children, The Balloon Farm, Dunn & McCashen, The Visions, Drake, The 31st Of February, Natty Bumpo and The Little Boy Blues COMPCD $21 SKU:7425

SHAPES AND SOUNDS - Vol 2 (60's UK psych pop)-Label:TOP SOUNDS ..Shades of Deepest Purple from the BBC Archives 1967-1971. "With this second excavation of previously unreleased live BBC session performances spanning the period 1967-1971, Shapes And Sounds becomes a series and Volume Two features a completely different line-up of bands from the previous set. Pride of place on this second edition arguably goes to the Gun, with three astonishing performances that were recorded nearly a year before 'Race With The Devil' which illustrate their late '67 menu of mod and psych-pop, with cracking versions of Rupert's Peoples 'Hold On,' Paul Simon's 'A Most Peculiar Man' and a quite splendid airing of their legendary 'Light On The Wall.' The Casuals surprise with the beat of 'Midnight Confessions' and 'Take Me For A Little While' as well as a fine rendering of 'Jesamine,' while the Mirage perform a live version of their May 1967 single, 'The Wedding Of Ramona Blair.' The Alan Bown play an excellent take of 'Magic Handkerchief' and even more interestingly offer two numbers that never appeared on any Bown release, with the self-penned progressive popper, 'Movie Star Baby' and a brilliant interpretation of the Association's 'Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies.' Also with three tracks on Shapes And Sounds are Wales' Bystanders, who turn in a lovely version of 'Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day' as well as a glorious homage to the Byrds with 'Renaissance Fair.' Even better and long talked about in collectors' circles but never previously released, is their absolutely stunning rendition of 'I Am The Walrus,' which Top Sounds are sure will disappoint no one! Sourced from an off-air recording of their only British television appearance on DDisco 2, Killing Floor perform 'Milkman' from their Out Of Uranus LP in superb quality (the TV show was wiped decades ago) and of similarly heinous rarity are live tracks from Portrait and Katch 22, who turn in forceful renderings of 'Born To Be Wild' and 'The Price Of Love' respectively (the latter of which is better than the Status Quo cover). The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with 12 of the 16 tracks sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The other performances have been taken from excellent off-air recordings and similarly shine and though few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. The presentation is immaculate and as with the previous Shapes And Sounds release, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period flavored package, including a 23-page booklet packed with photos and information. Except for the Mirage recording being bootlegged many years ago (in lesser quality), none of the tracks have ever been commercially available and most have not been heard in public since the '60s. Shapes And Sounds is a legitimate limited edition release, licensed from the BBC with the blessing/co-operation of many band members." COMPCD $26 SKU:7999

LOVE PEACE AND POETRY- Chilean Psychedelic Music -Label:QDK GERMANY This exciting new part in the excellent ŒLove Peace & Poetry1 series features recordings from the late 60s and early 70s psych scene of Chili. COMPLP $22 SKU:7908

LOVE, PEACE & POETRY- Japanese Psychedelic Music - Label:QDK GERMANY Fourth volume in this phenomenal series of compilations focusing on the weirdest and most uncommon records from the late 60s/early 70s. Here's an album of his late 70s/early 80s recordings, featuring all four sides of his two singles, as well as 9 previously unheard tracks, including his aborted third single "On the coast". 47 Minutes of magnificent psychedelic otherness, imagine being trapped in a Victorian timewarp. Essential brainfood for everyone who agrees with NME that "Hilly fields" is the best psychedelic record made since the 60s. 1000 Numbered copies on 190 gram audiophile vinyl, coming in a fully illustrated and annotated sleeve. LP $28 SKU:6199

PICADILLY LINE -The Huge World Of Emily Small- (60s psych pop) Label:LIGHTNING TREE 1967 album by the whimsical UK psychedelic pop band who featured future Edwards Hand founders Roger Hand and Rod Edwards (also later in Jade) and who also played at legendary psychedelic venues UFO and Middle Earth! Classic English '60's psych pop that is comparable to The World Of Oz, psych Chad and Jeremy, and Donovan. The Donovan comparison is especially apt as the Picadilly Line is not only produced by Don's producer, John Cameron but also features the same backing band used on Sunshine Superman. Including the beautiful original, flower power pop-art sleeve this reissue is taken from the master tapes and also includes ten great bonus tracks (some of which are previously unreleased) and a detailed booklet with photos and band history. PIG NEWTON & the WIZARDS FROM KANSAS- Still in Kansas (rare 70’s psych )-Label:ROCKADELIC RECORDS last copies of this out of print title!! material by the great Wizards From Kansas (whose lone LP has also become available on CD again after many years in the void), recorded as a demo tape at Cavern Sound Studios during the year before they got a record deal with Mercury; similar to their album, and therefore top-notch psychedelia; six of the eight cuts are earlier versions of tracks that appeared on their eponymous album, but there’s also a wah wah drenched version of ‘All Along the Watchtower’ and the band original ‘Clouds of Exchange’ to round out this LP; limited pressing of 600 copies, with two insert sheets containing band photos and history. RAVEN- BACK TO OHIO BLUES (70’s blues/psych) -Label:OWL The "Back to Ohio Blues" LP by Raven (thats one mans pseudonym, not a band name) might be the ultimate non-commercial 70s American rock record, unintentionally putting the most ardent anarchist punk bands to shame. Why? Raven never sold a single copy of the original LP-though hes making up for it by this reissue! "Back to Ohio Blues" was purely a vanity pressing, meant for friends, comrades, and maybe former cellmates. I imagine most of the original copies have smack/crank/blow/weed residue ground into the grooves and/or were tossed to the curb when the biker who owned the LP skipped town. Im not sure Raven couldve sold many at the time, though, because this burnt-out, histrionic, bluesy hard rock strikes me as a Led Zeppelin fans bad dream, like if Zep were lobotomized (if only), left with only the most rudimentary shell of its former self-fucking, drugging, the blues, and nary an extended metaphor to be found. That said, Ravens backing band, with Raven singing and wylin out on the 6-string, managed to produce a convincing and competent stripped-down sound, especially considering the LP recording was the only time the band played together. SIMMONS, JEFF- Naked Angels OST (60’s heavy psych)- Label:WORLD IN SOUND (GERMANY) Deluxe full color gatefold edition. "This is the first of two Straight label albums by Zappa's multi-talented 'sideman,' Jeff Simmons. In Seattle 1968 Herb Cohen and Frank Zappa were at the sound check for Jeff's band Easy Chair and were fascinated by Jeff's talent. He was soon signed to Straight records and later Jeff was in the Mothers of Invention at the time of 200 Motels. Both albums, Naked Angels and Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up were recorded in 1969. Reflecting strong fuzz guitar, heavy and psychedelicate surf-rock, Naked Angels, the original soundtrack for a Roger Corman cult biker movie, is a sequence of mostly instrumentals that combine the freedom of the late '60s mood and melody perfectly. This LP reissue comes with the original gatefold cover artwork by John Williams and includes the original French movie poster. This album is one of the coolest soundtracks made in the late '60s and was carefully remastered to sound today as fresh as it was 40 years ago." LP $26 SKU:7201

WIND - Make Believe (pop/psych)- Label:LIFE breezy sunshine pop/psych album with songs by Chip Taylor & Al Gorgoni, Richie Cordell, and Bo Gentry (who also produced); the single of title track ‘Make Believe’ made the Top 40 charts; awesome chrome mirror cover on micro label. Gentry and Cordell were the production team who with Tommy James made the first strictly bubblegum hit, 'I Think We're Alone Now' (January
1967) with its pioneering bass line. Worked with James through 'Mony Mony' (another classic riff), and (together and separately) with the big Kasenetz-Katz groups (Crazy Elephant's 'Gimme Gimme Good Lovin', etc.). Formed their own label, Life, in late 1969, which had one fair-sized hit by Wind ('Make Believe'/'Groovin' With Mr. Bloe'), which is happily to be found on this album. Life Records came to an end, and little has been heard from Gentry or Cordell since. Producer Kenny Laguna (bubble-gum denizen, part-time Shondell, and eventual producer of ‘I Love Rock n' Roll’ by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, ‘I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow, and ‘Abdul & Cleopatra’ by Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers) says the following about the music of Wind: “Bo Gentry and I found him [Tony Orlando] looking rather portly, and working behind a desk at April Blackwood Publishing. We talked him into singing a hit called ‘Make Believe’, a shameless Four Seasons knockoff. I sang the high voice and Tony sang baritone. When ‘Make Believe’, the first Wind single was ready to be released, we needed a B-side. Our Buddah releases were known for their ridiculous B-sides, like A-sides played backwards in order for the business dudes to copyright something with themselves as writers, even though they couldn't write songs. (One of the record company heads actually had a 3-year old daughter who had "written" more songs than Cole Porter). We dusted off a backing track from a ‘Yummy Yummy,’ ‘Chewy Chewy,’ ‘Sugar Sugar,’ ‘Money Money’ wannabe song that was called something like ‘Bingo Bingo,’ and improvised a haphazard harmonica and melodica overdub for the B-side. After ‘Make Believe’ was a Top 20 hit in the United States, we sent it to England. There, the very exited and supportive BBC was happy to showcase the latest hit by our bubblegum dynasty. It was an instant success. I got a call from Bo Gentry, who said, "I've got a wedding present for you, you wrote the #1 record in Great Britain." "What song?" I asked. "Groovin' with Mr. Bloe" was the answer. I didn’t remember a song with that title. It turns out the Beeb (BBC) had unwittingly played the wrong side of the single and the throw away B-side became a worldwide hit, one of the biggest instrumentals of all-time, one of my greatest songwriting efforts, and, although in the U.S it only reached top 50 in Billboard, it was used as Dick Clark’s American Bandstand theme for many years.” Ah, the many and varied wondrous ways of the record business.
